From the Principal's Desk...

Parents and Guardians,


We have had a great week here at St. John’s! All of our students are back from quarantine (please knock on wood as you read this statement). Just a few reminders for the week:

  • All donations to the St. John’s Spectacular are due by Friday October 1, 2021. This money will be used to purchase items for the grade level themed baskets that will be raffled off at the event. Last year we raised over $7,500 from the baskets that were purchased with the generous donations from our students. The St. John’s Spectacular is our largest fundraiser for the school, raising over $150,000 in the last two years, and allows us to keep tuition rates low as well as purchase much needed items for the school. Any student who donates money to the baskets will receive a raffle chance for the basket of their choosing (a $5 value). Any class that has 100% participation will receive an out of uniform day on Thursday October 14th. As of this morning, 47% of our students have turned in a donation. Kindergarten and 4th grade are leading with 63% of their students participating thus far.

  • There will be no school on Friday, October 8th and Monday, October 11th for Teacher In-Service.

  • I just wanted to remind everyone about the policy regarding students going on vacation during the school year. Teachers have been receiving an uptick in requests, so I wanted to remind everyone of the policy. Per the handbook:

Absences for Vacations During the School Year - Vacations are discouraged during school time. While we acknowledge that unusual circumstances may necessitate a vacation during the school year, a note regarding the vacation must be sent to the office at least one week prior to the vacation for approval by the principal. Upon approval, the office staff will make a copy of the note with the principal's signature. The copy will be given to the homeroom teacher, and the original will be kept on file. Teachers are not required to prepare assignments for students to complete during the vacation period nor instruct the students on missed material. Vacation days are unexcused absences.

Please make sure you are following the above guidelines when informing your student’s teacher about upcoming absences due to a vacation.

School Spirit Wear

As fall is upon us and the weather is turning cooler, a reminder that the only sweatshirts and jackets that may be worn over the uniform polos are official school spirit wear (with the triangle logo) ordered through the school office. Every Friday is "Spirit Wear Day" and students may wear any St. John's shirt, sweatshirt or jacket.

First Grade Prize Box

Mrs. Sander is seeking donations of small novelty items for her classroom "prize box." If you have any little trinkets, happy meal toys, etc. laying around the house that you would like to find a home for, please send them into school for Mrs. Sander.

High School Release of Records

Attached below is a release of records for your child entering high school next year. The school office will need a release from EVERY student even if they will be attending a public high school (please note what public school on the form). Please check the box next to any school that your child is interested in attending, up to 3 schools (there will a $10 charge for each additional school). Their records will be sent only to those schools. We would like to have these forms back by October 29th.

Last Call for Raffle Basket Donations

Every student who brings in a donation of any amount will receive a ticket to enter into the basket of their choice, Every homeroom that has 100% participation will receive an out-of-uniform day (date TBD). Any amount contributed counts for both incentives.

St. John's Athletic Boosters

Boys' Basketball - Registration is now open and will go through October 3th for grades

3rd – 8th. Second grade and high school will be open until November 14th. Sign-ups will only be offered online at www.stjab.com. In the upper right corner you will see the login or register tab if you do not already have an account. If you do not sign-up during these time frames, we cannot guarantee your son a spot on a team. If you sign-up late and are given a spot on a team a late fee will be charged.


IMPORTANT INFO:

  • Tryouts for 5th – 8th grade –Will be in Mid-October so you must sign up by October 3th to receive tryout info.
  • We will be playing in the Western Basketball Conference (WBC). Information about the league can be found at www.wbcbasketball.com. The season runs from December to end of February (depending on the grade level) with practices starting in November.
  • 2nd grade will be playing in the St. Bernard League. The season runs from January to end of February. All games are played at St. Bernard. 2nd grade signups will end on November 14th.

La Salle Information Nights and Open House

La Salle information nights are designed for parents and guardians to learn more about life at La Salle, the admissions process, deadlines, financial aid, scholarships and more. Dates for Information Nights are October 13, 19 and 27 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Doors will open at 6:45 pm, please use the courtyard entrance. Save the Date for Open House on November 7, 2021. Mercy McAuley

Mercy McAuley Offering HSPT Prep Class

Mercy McAuley High School offers a 4-week prep course to help 8th graders prepare for the High School Placement Test (HSPT). The course covers academic content on the test, familiarizes the students with test format, teaches test-taking strategies and eases apprehension about the test. There is a $75 fee for the 4-week course, which is from 9 – 11 a.m. on the four Saturdays leading up to the test: October 23, October 30 November 6, and November 13. 7th and 8th grade Future Saints, be sure to join us at the Seton & Elder Tailgate Mixer on Friday, October 8 at 6:00 p.m.! Pre-registration is required at www.setoncincinnati.org and includes free admission to the Elder football game, a Seton giveaway and LaRosa’s pizza in the Pit!


Parents of 8th graders are welcome to attend Coffee & Conversation to learn more about Seton’s academics, technology use, the admission process, financial aid and scholarships. Elder High School – Grade School Events

Elder Shadow Days: A shadow visit is the best way for an 8th grade boy to experience what a day at Elder High School is like! Be led by an Elder student for an entire day, and see what it’s like to be a Panther! The preferred shadow dates, and additional information can be found at www.elderhs.org/shadow.


Elder & Seton Football Tailgate Party & Grade School Night:

Friday, October 8th - 7th & 8th Grade Tailgate party begins at 5:30 PM - Kickoff at 7:00 PM


Join us for Football Grade School Night as the Panthers battle against Indianapolis Roncalli in The Pit. All 7th & 8th grade students are invited to a free tailgate party before the game, and all grade school students will receive free admission to the game!

Open House: Elder High School is excited to welcome families to our campus for Open House on Thursday, November 11th from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Take a tour led by a Student Ambassador, meet our dedicated faculty & staff, and learn about everything Elder has to offer to its students! Register for an Open House Tour at www.elderhs.org/openhouse. Tours will take approximately one hour.


High School Placement Test (HSPT): The Archdiocese of Cincinnati will administer the High School Placement Test (HSPT) at area high schools (including Elder High School) on November 20, 2021. Students are required to register for the HSPT by November 3rd.
