O'NEIL'S NEWS

Throughout the summer months several CUES teachers participated in the InPACT training made available through our Project Healthy Schools grant. The In PACT stands for Interrupting Prolonged Sitting with ACTivity. This program focuses on physical activity intervention to reduce sedentary behaviors. Teachers learned about making adjustments in their curriculum and classroom design to increase structured physical activity opportunities throughout the school day.


Columbia Upper Elementary School along with two other schools across Michigan were chosen for InPACT. We are grateful to the University of Michigan and Project Healthy Schools for making this opportunity possible for CUES. Physical activity in and out of the classroom supports academic performance along with better emotional, mental and physical health outcomes. Students participating have learned about these benefits and enjoyed being physically active.


As the program wraps up, we would like to honor the following classrooms who participated in InPACT:

With excitement, we would like to share that the Big Ten Network visited Ms. Weidenbach's classroom this week to film the InPACT training. Because of their success with the program, the students were able to show their physical activity breaks in action. The network is highlighting the University of Michigan, featuring Project Healthy Schools. This was an exciting event for our students and staff!

It is Cold outside!

Columbia Upper Elementary School students will be going outside daily throughout the winter months. Please be sure to send your child with coats, snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves to stay warm.

MR.LEARNED

Mr. Learned teaches 6th Grade at CUES. In his free time he enjoys attending sporting events with his family, especially at the University of Michigan. He also coaches wrestling and our CUES First Lego League Robotics Teams. Some of his favorite foods are lasagna, Pringles, and Reeces.

"Picture the Past"

All entries for the district poster contest are due on December 16th. Please contact the office with any questions. Winners will be announced at the Winter Homecoming basketball game on January 20th.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!

During the winter months we plan to host Lunch Clubs for interested CUES students. We are interested in providing fun activities during their lunch and recess break. If you have a special talent or skill you would be willing to share, please contact Mrs. O'Neil to volunteer. Some ideas include: knitting, painting, crafting, cooking, sewing, yoga/fitness activities or any other talent you would like to share. Please contact Mrs. O'Neil to set up dates and times if you are interested.

STUDENT COUNCIL FOOD DRIVE

The CUES Student Council is holding their annual Food Drive to help our local families this holiday season. We will collect items October 26th through December 14th. All donations must be nonperishable food items. Suggested items include: canned food, baby food, boxed food mixes (mac and cheese, jello, cake mix, etc.), diapers, toilet paper, and toothpaste. All items must be new and unopened.

COLUMBIA SCHOOL DISTRICT 3RD ANNUAL CASH BASH

The 3rd Annual Columbia Cash Bash will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 5 to 10:30 PM at the Gene Davis & Sons Banquet & Convention Center. Tickets are $80.00 and admit 2 people. Tickets can be purchased in the CUES office.
