James John K-5 School News & Updates ~Noticias y Información

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE ~ MENSAJE DEL DIRECTOR

Dear James John Families, ~Estimadas familias de James John,

Hello to you and I hope you are enjoying this nice fall weather this week. We are now completing our fifth week of comprehensive distance learning and I have noticed that students, parents and teachers are more familiar with the routines of the on-line schedule. As a parent, I know that this routine is not easy and I know we all wish we could return for in-person learning, but I definitely see a lot of "perseverance" by everyone in our school. In this newsletter, we will share some exciting updates about our things like school garden and our Student Council. These are ways that we are trying to maintain "business as usual" for our school and students in spite of the challenges we face. Please enjoy this newsletter and please reach out to us if you have any questions or feedback for us. Until next week!

Garden Update -

Hello James John Families!

We are Grow Portland, a local nonprofit that provides garden-based education around science, sustainability, and healthy eating. We are so excited to be starting a new partnership with your school this year! Over the summer the garden was expanded with some brand new raised beds thanks to some very dedicated parents and volunteers. It’s looking great and already growing fall crops! I am Madeline, James John's Garden Educator. I am a Portland native, a Master Gardener, and have a Master’s in Education from Portland State University. You can find out more about me in this video :)

So far this fall we have been hard at work harvesting produce from our ten garden sites to share with families. James John received 28 bags of produce earlier this month! You may have also seen activity handouts from us in your school lunches. Next up we will be sharing bags of apples for at-home tastings, thanks to our friends at Portland Nursery.

Like the rest of school, garden lessons will take place virtually this fall. We are sharing online lessons with classroom teachers that include videos and hands-on activities. You can find out more and download some of these activities at growportland.org, or check us out on social media!

Take care,

Madeline Miller & the Grow Portland Team

James John Student Council and Schoolwide Election - (November 3)

Once again, we will have a Student Council at James John this school year. The Student Council will be comprised of two representatives from each classroom in grades 2-5. In the coming week, students in grades 2-5 who wish to serve on the student council will be writing statements of interest and will present these to their classmates. In the week of October 26 , 2nd-5th grade classes will choose their representatives and representatives will nominate 4th and 5th grade representatives to serve as officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer). On November 3 (national election day), all students will vote electronically for student council officers, school spirit days, as well as the name of our new school garden. Student Council will then meet with Dr. Melvin and Ms. Kieffer throughout the year to lend their voice to school leadership.

October focus is PERSERVERANCE -

We may not be there YET but each day we are getting better and closer to our goals!

At the end of the month we will have an assembly honoring our hard work and acknowledge students who have perservered.

Friday Oct. 30th will be a Spirit Day. Costume Day!!!
