Over Half a Million Dollars Awarded This Fall
MSDWC has been awarded several grants throughout Fall 2020, totaling in $589,881.17! We are extremely appreciative of the organizations and individuals who made these funds possible.
COPS Grant
The Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) awarded MSDWC $345,000 in school safety funding through its School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP). SVPP provides up to 75% funding for school safety measures in and around primary and secondary schools and school grounds.
GEER Grant
MSDWC was a recipient of a grant through the Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund, which will help fund devices and broadband connectivity in rural areas and support professional development. MSDWC was awarded $142,381.17 for student and staff connectivity hardware. Another $7,500 was awarded to MSDWC for Train-the-Trainer workshops, which will focus on digital leadership/culture, digital learning, and social-emotional learning.
Digital Learning Capacity Grant
$75,000 was received through the Department of Education from CARES funding. The funds will go towards professional development for staff on best practices for providing online instruction.
Come Back Stronger Grant
Little Norse Preschool received $20,000 from the Early Learning Indiana's "Come Back Stronger" Grant. Little Norse Preschool will use the grant funds to support safety-related expenses and challenges as it continues to serve families in the wake of the pandemic.
Northfield Celebrates Homecoming 2020
"Lettuce Celebrate" was the theme of Northfield Homecoming 2020. Each day throughout the week featured a salad-inspired dress-up day, like "Thousand Island" (Hawaiian & Tourist), "Caesar" (Greek), "Ranch" (Country Western), and more. Friday morning the seniors gathered early on the football field for breakfast and watching the sunrise together. On Friday afternoon a video pep rally shown in classrooms took the place of the traditional all-school gathering.

Local news station 105.9 The Bash has begun offering a weekly video segment called "This Week in Wabash", which highlights different organizations and events. So far each episode has included an MSDWC interview. You can watch the MSDWC segments through our Facebook Video Series.
Thank you to Wade Weaver and the team at 105.9 for including MSDWC in this production. Be sure to check out the entire "This Week in Wabash" episodes on 105.9 The Bash.
Northfield Teacher Named Finalist for AP Science Teacher of the Year
Sabrina LeMaster, a science teacher at Northfield Jr/Sr High School, has been named one of three finalists for the 2020 AP Science Teacher of the Year by the University of Notre Dame’s Advanced Placement Teacher Investment Program (AP-TIP). Both Northfield and Southwood High Schools participate in AP-TIP, a program that works with high schools in Indiana to increase student enrollment in AP math, science, and English courses and to increase the number of qualifying scores on AP exams for those courses.
Mrs. LeMaster has been teaching for over 17 years and is currently in her eighth year at Northfield. She teaches seventh grade STEM, Biology I, and AP Biology. Three years ago, Mrs. LeMaster began teaching AP Biology, and in the past two years alone Northfield’s passing scores of the AP Biology exam have more than doubled. The AP Biology exam is extremely difficult and covers college-level biology curriculum the students learn throughout the school year.
