# The KinderConnect

## Happy November!

This month has been a very busy month in Kindergarten! We finished up reading and math assessments and conducted conferences. Establishing a partnership between you and your child's teacher is critical to their success in school. Therefore, we would like to extend a very special thank you to all the parents that were able to attend conferences and made them a huge success! We hope everyone had a very restful and safe Thanksgiving holiday!

The Kindergarten Team

In reading we have been working very hard on picking out key details. This month we also focused heavily on non fiction books and learning the difference between informational text and literary (fiction) text. In our small groups, we have been focusing on one to one matching as we read and beyond the text questions. Beyond the text questions are questions that are not directly stated in the text. These types of questions require critical thinking from our students. We also went on a leaf hunt and read Thanksgiving stories at the end of the month.

## Word Study

This month we have been learning more sight words to help us read. We have also been focusing on learning the beginning sounds of letters.

## Writing

In writing we have been focusing very heavily on the mechanics of writing- using spaces, letter formation, punctuation, etc. We have also been learning how to write about a small moment in our life. We love writing about these moments!

## Math

We have been working on shapes and measurement a lot this month. We have had so much fun going on shape walks and using shapes to create other shapes and pictures. We also did a fun activity focusing on positional words, using our chairs and tables. Be sure to ask your child about different shapes and where they are in relation to them using the words above, below, behind, infront of, etc. In measurement we learned about length, height and weight.

## Science/Social Studies

In Science we have been using the KiNex to learn about force and motion. We even got to build a ramp in the STEAM lab with Mr. D!! We had so much fun building our ramps and using unifix cubes to measure how far our car went down the ramp! We built a swing set to learn about swinging and used super balls to learn about rolling.

We ended the month by learning all about the Early Americans. We learned about the pilgrims and how they lived, what they ate and what they wore. We also got to make a Mayflower boat. How fun! We ended the unit by learning about the Indians and what the very first Thanksgiving was like. We quickly learned that our Thanksgiving was different from the fist Thanksgiving. We were very surprised by that!
