Gladys Paulus
realistic looking felted features
at atelier Fiberfusing
We are happy to invite Gladys Paulus from the UK at atelier Fiberfusing in Amstelveen ( Neth) for the following felt classes
October 12-13-14-15, 2016 Felted Fantasy Masks
October 16-17, 2016 Seed Pods
Please note these workshop are NOT suitable for beginners. This workshop is only for experienced feltmakers. Experience in making 3-dimensional felt around a resist is required.
Animal Masks
You can choose to create a whole new type of animal, or invent more abstract elements to incorporate into your mask. You can be as outlandish and extrovert or restrained in your approach as you wish
During this 4-day master class with UK-based felt artist Gladys Paulus, you will learn how to calculate, design and create a resist template for a basic ‘hood’ which will become the starting point for an experimental and playful fantasy mask.
Mask making requires a combined approach of thorough planning and intuitive felt making. More than just a face cover, these masks will cover the head completely and are sculptures in their own right. You will learn how to achieve facial symmetry, experiment with different types of protrusions and colour, and learn to felt all the 3-dimensional parts together.
Felted Seed Pods
Using the humble seedpod as a starting point, during this 2-day workshop with felt artist Gladys Paulus, you will create a small series of pod sculptures using a variety of wet felting
techniques, including 2 or 3 dimensional resists and surface textures. It is also possible to incorporate wire armature.
You are encouraged to come with an open attitude and a sense of play. Expect to
experiment with form and surface texture as we start to interpret nature’s shapes into felt and come up with our own felt making solutions. Seed pods merely act as our starting point... There are no ‘mistakes', there are just opportunities to learn!
In order to help focus on the shape and sculptural qualities of the pods, the use of colour is restricted to a very minimal palette of 2 -3 (natural) colours maximum.
about the artist
What I love most in life is the simple enjoyment of making. Those moments of complete absorption and connection, when there is just the here and now, and time almost comes to a standstill.
Feltmaking is a slow craft. My work is a process of observation; one piece triggers ideas for the next one and prompts questions about what is technically possible. Ideas often come quicker than the hands can keep up with, so I have a back catalogue full of ideas to draw on. Underlying themes such as my family’s history of emigration, observations made in nature, and the properties of the material itself all inform what I make.
