Bulldog Bark
December 2019
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I cannot believe that Christmas is less than a week away. I am realizing that the older I get, the faster time seems to go by. I hope that you and your family have had a good year and that you have an enjoyable and safe Christmas holiday. I wanted to send out some information and remind you of some details at Mentone Elementary before your children went on Christmas break. Thank you for continued support and I wish you the very best through the holiday season.
Mr. Dahms, Principal Mentone Elementary
Student Council
A congratulations goes out to our student council. Mentone Elementary School entered a tree in the Chamber of Commerce’s Festival of Trees held December 7th. Our tree won first place. Thank you to everyone that voted for Mentone’s tree. The tree was donated to the Chamber and auctioned in the Silent Auction. The money was donated to Helping Hands. Decorations for the tree were made by the Mentone Student Council. If you did not see the tree Saturday and you would like to see it, Deli and Dough bought the tree and it is on display there.
Events
We have a few events scheduled at Mentone that we hope your children will enjoy. As part of our school wide behavior plan, our staff is planning and will begin implementing a monthly award for students who do not get a discipline ticket throughout the month. On Thursday afternoon, students will have a chance to participate in an activity in our large group room while enjoying an ice cream sandwich and Christmas music. If your child talks about this activity, we hope that it is an encouragement to them as they continue to make good choices throughout the school day.
On Friday, December 20th from 9:00-9:30 a.m., our students will enjoy a teacher skit, will sing a few Christmas songs, and will have a brief celebration of a good first semester. While you as parents are always invited to school activities, this particular celebration will be short. Please note that our school’s next Bulldog Bash will be on Friday, January 10th starting at 8:45 a.m. During this time, we will recognize a variety of accomplishments of our students (PBIS awards, Student of the Month, BUG awards, etc.). We would love to have you at this event if you have time to attend.
5th Grade Boys Basketball
I wanted to thank Carl Weaver, our fifth grade boys basketball coach, for a great season. Throughout the year our boys showed a lot of growth and finished the season with a win. Thank you to Mrs. Rutherford (Mentone athletic director) who coordinated the details, Mr. Weaver for his time and efforts, and to the parents of our boys basketball players.
Important Dates
School will not be in session from Monday, December 23rd- Monday, January 6th. On Tuesday, January 7th, we will start the second semester of the school year and enjoy our first day back to school.
Please note that report cards will be passed out to students on Friday, January 10th.
Reminder - Student Dress
During the winter months, our students seem to perform better in the classroom if they are able to enjoy some time outside. As a school, I would like the students to go outside as often as possible while at the same time being sensitive to the temperature and weather conditions. As a practical guide, students will normally go out if the wind chill is 20 degrees or above. For example, today the temperature will reach up to the low 20’s, but the wind chill will be below 20 degrees so we will not go outside. By Friday, the temperature is supposed to reach 37 degrees which means that we will likely go outside for recess. Please make sure your child comes to school with their coats, hats, and even gloves if possible so they can be comfortable during this time.
