She was born on April 4, 1928, in St Louis, Missouri. Her parents divorced when she was three and her and her brother, Bailey, were sent to live with their grandmother. She died on May 28, 2014 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

After divorcing her first husband, Tosh Angelos, in 1954, she began a nightclub career in San Francisco and dropped her birth name, taking on the name Maya Angelou. It was her brother, Bailey, who nicknamed her “Maya.”
