Water For Elephants
In the book, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen the main character Jacob is learning how to cope with the world in his old age but he also tells us about what he did when he was young. After his parents die and he doesn't finish his final exams to become a vet, he hops a train and it turns out to be the Benzini Brothers circus train. At first they want to throw him off but an older gentleman Camel takes him under his wing and lets him stay. The next day he has him work, cleaning up after the horses and helping set up for the show that night. The ringmaster Uncle Al who is in charge of the circus meets Jacob and he offer him a job when he finds out that he was studying to be a vet. August who helps Uncle Al with the circus and Marlena his wife that is in the show befriends Jacob, they invite him over for drinks and dinner, but as time passes through the book Jacob starts to fall in love with Marlena, which causes some problems. August has a very bipolar personality and doesn't know how to control it so when they purchase the new star of the show Rosie and she doesn't listen he beats her and nobody is able to do anything about it. There are many problems within the circus that no one is able to control because they could get redlighted for no reason, so no one ever speaks up. Sometimes things get hard and they don't work out the way you want them to but sometimes it turns out to be a blessing in disguise and things get better in the end. We don't know how things will turn out for Jacob quite yet but we will hope for the best.
Rosie is as the book describes her "an enormous beast the color of storm clouds" (Gruen 125). She is the star performer in the show of the Benzini Brothers circus. She is a very smart elephant that only understands Polish. She is abused throughout the book and is still is forgiving towards August. She is very sweet and always smiles.
