Reading/Daily 5
The important parts of a sentence have been an area of focus for us this week during our large group lessons. Students now know that a sentence must contain a person, place, or thing as well as an action. We also reviewed that sentences need a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between each word, and punctuation of some kind at the end. We also learned that the word "I" is always capitalized, no matter where it is located in a sentence. Rhyming as well as sounding out/spelling consonant-vowel-consonant words (such as Tim and hit) continue to be focus skills for us.
Math
We have had fun continuing to practice estimation this week as we guess how many Skittles are in various plastic bags. There are 12 bags so each student will get to bring one home before we are finished. Tally marks and tally charts were a new skill we acquired this week. Students enjoyed a "Tally Around the Room" activity where they tallied how many chairs we have as well as markers, computers, and windows (just to name a few items that were on our lists). Practice this skill at home by doing things such as tallying how many blue Legos there are versus green ones (or with any item that comes in many shapes or colors!).
Social Studies
We continued our "Where We Live" unit this week as we discussed maps and their purpose as well as cardinal directions. They enjoyed looking at maps of the town, state, country, and planet.
Our trip to the Kirby Science Center and CineDome at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, SD:
