Hoit's Highlights

One Star Family,

I have had a great time visiting with students in grades 3-6 as we prepared to launch KS Assessments. During this time I showed them some pics and videos and talked to them about their “Awesomeness!” Teachers took that conversation a step further by taking students “One Word” that hallmarks their awesomeness and wrote each student a shout out following test sessions this week. I am so proud of our One Star Family and their effort to support one another during this time. Students share the same emotions as we do as adults when approaching big projects and high expectations to perform well. I hope you are able to take some time to talk to your child about what their “One Word” was and the feedback they received from their teacher. Each of them truly are awesome!

Thank you Mr. Barnett, School Improvement, and parents for coming together to enjoy a great night of Goal Setting this Thursday night. Mr. Barnett was able to recruit a Shawnee Mission alumni and Super Bowl Champion, Mr. Ryan Lilja, to come talk to our students and families about the power of Goal Setting in reaching their highest potential. Ryan was a “Super Star” sport, allowing little and big kids (my husband included) to try on his Super Bowl ring and take photos with him. Thank you Ryan and Mr. Barnett for your time and sharing your passion and energy in effort to teach students this great life-skill! Please take a second to complete a quick survey found below to help us prepare next year’s Family Engagement Nights. Check out social media for photos!

As many of you know, Shawnee Mission is expanding programming options for 6th grade math. In additional to 6th Grade math, Pre-Algebra will be offered at every elementary school during the school day next year. Rising Star will send home a parent letter next Wednesday to 5th grade families about this change and criteria students must meet to take the Pre-Algebra course in 6th grade. So, more information to come!

As mentioned last week, a task force is reviewing grade configuration, specifically how to best serve sixth-grade students in the Shawnee Mission School District. Superintendent Jim Hinson has engaged the task force to discuss this topic as a result of feedback and questions he received from stakeholders. To inform the review process, the task force is holding community forums in each of the five geographic high school feeder areas. Each forum is open to all community members.

Forums have taken place in the SM North and SM Northwest areas.

The schedule of remaining meetings, all of which are scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at each location is as follows:

  • March 10: Indian Hills Middle School

  • March 21: Indian Woods Middle School

  • March 24: Westridge Middle School

I look forward to “Shining Week” with our Stars prior to Spring Break!

As Always, Today is a Great Day to Shine Bright!

Three Claps,

Mrs. Hoit

6th Grade Musical - Volunteers Needed!

Hello 6th grade families,

I am reaching out to you in hopes to have a few volunteers to help with the 6th grade musical. Please remember that the 6th grade musical is a very large endeavor that not all schools participate in. The musical is only made possible with the support from friends and family. I have sent home a sign up sheet for parents to help with the 6th grade musical, but received no volunteers thus far. Please contact me at the information below if you would like to help with 6th grade musical.

I have also sent home the script, with speaking lines, for every student that asked for a speaking part. Please make sure lines are memorized by March 21st. Thank you so much. I am really looking forward to it!

Are You a Member of the PTA?

Join PTA for just $7 per person or $12 for couples in the same household! And don't worry, by joining you are not committing to meetings and volunteering all the time. You are free to choose what you attend and volunteer for!

What does your $7 do? $3.50 goes tot he State PTA. The rest is used to help our kids! Last year our budget called for $8,000 for school field trips! We put on Family Fun nights and 2 class parties per year! And those are just a small amount of the awesome things our PTA does! So please join and help us continue to be able to fund these awesome items!
