Teaching Addition and Subtraction
As we move through the year teaching addition and subtraction, it is vital to understand that how we teach these concepts is so important. We need to ensure we teach the method of addition and subtraction consistently with our students so a solid, deep conceptual understanding in place value is achieved. While there is value in teaching multiple strategies for our students to select a strategy that works best for them, there is also value in teaching 1 consistent way making the following year's skills a little easier to learn for our students. The video link below shows the progression of addition and subtraction from grades K-4. While I know right now this directly effects first and second grade teachers, kindergarten teachers.... I need you to watch this video too. I know you are not to this point yet, but you will be and we need you to lay the foundation for the rest of us (no pressure). :)
