The Best Middle School in the Universe!
Volume 14, Number 15 - February 26, 2020
Week of February 26th
CMS Families,
All grades are taking benchmarks next week. They are as follows:
- Wednesday, March 4th - 6th/7th Math and 8th Science benchmark
- Thursday, March 5th - 6th/7th Reading and 8th Social Studies benchmark
We want all students to try their best and work hard on these tests. We use them to see what areas they need help in and what areas they have learned. Teachers will follow up with you and each student about their results the following week.
We are down to 5 weeks before the 7th grade STAAR Writing Test and the 8th grade Reading and Math STAAR test. Our 7th grade Advanced Math students will also take the 8th grade Math STAAR. If you see your child is NOT passing their CBA's or UC's that is an indication they need more help. If your child did not pass or perform just as good on their benchmark this year as last year, they should also consider staying after school for extra help. Students should be staying after school for any grade below a 70 and below an 85 for pre-ap and high school credit classes. It is important for our students to master the content so they are prepared for the next
The CMS PTA is registered with Amazon Smile as a non-profit and they donate .5% of each purchase when customer select our organization on their Amazon Smile Account. Please help spread the word by sharing on social media if you can. Below is the link.
Please remember about our FREE Math program called Dreambox. This is a GREAT opportunity to fill in the gaps and to get ahead. We are having a new SPRING Dreambox Challenge so take a look at the flyer before for more details.

Passion Project Information - Please Read
Dearest Chapa Parents and Faculty, I wanted to update you on the specifics to the Passion Project/GT Showcase that will be on Tuesday March 3rd, 2020 at Chapa Middle School from 6pm - 8pm. The following document explains what the Passion Project/GT Showcase is. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14vrELFDprQmAE-UUV1VdgvQpxejnTKzaB510Bdi-h24/edit?usp=sharing We are having a MANDATORY finalizing meeting on Monday March 2nd, 2020 after school in the cafeteria until 5 oclock. The purpose of this is to make sure their projects are completed or apply the finishing touches if necessary. We will have supplies, computers, printers, and other materials on hand. We will set up for the next day, so that we can be as prepared as possible. Please sign them up for the late bus if they need it for Monday. Some teacher’s required their Pre-AP students to participate in this project and we appreciate their hard work. As far as 8th grade Gateway To Technology(GTT) students, they have been given two weeks to work on this in class. Although their work is required, participation at the showcase is voluntary as notice of this was not given enough time to mandate attendance. I would love for them to be there if possible but it will not affect their grade. We will still showcase their work but it will not be counted towards the awards that students who attend will receive. Students who participated in the Passion Project will have an opportunity to win prizes but they will also receive a pizza party for their efforts. This is in the document above. I tried to meet with most of the students who signed up for this today and ask them what I could do to help them with their projects and what it is that they needed to be able to finish on time. Some kids are behind and some are on top of it. Please check in with them if they have mentioned this and let me know if I can do anything else to help. Lastly, thank you to those people who have helped, participated, or in anyway involved. I am excited to see how this turns out because this is our first time to do this, and frankly, it was a bit of a challenge. So please have some grace with us if everything doesn’t go as planned. We will look for feedback from our students and teachers as we plan for this next year. If you have any questions, please contact me via email and I will try and help in anyway. Sincerely, Alan D’Etcheverry Email : alan.detcheverry@hayscisd.net
