Homeschool with Heart - By Jaime Grasmick
Are We Crazy?
We’ve all seen it- the look when we tell a stranger that we homeschool our kids. Some react with complete perplexity, stunned like a deer caught in headlights. Others give the “I feel so sorry for you” kind of look, while others start to look for your kids so they can determine how much we’ve damaged them. It may be fair to say that the homeschooling community is still not 100% well received, but we do this for our kids!
I recently was in a resort spa with a retired couple from Canada. We were visiting the resort on a Tuesday (because we can since we homeschool). I had taken the kids to visit a mission and it was a very successful homeschool day. To make matters even more pleasant, all four kids were getting along; even the docent at the mission mentioned how much harmony there was between us. Maybe that was because we were walking church grounds- but I’ll take it!
This sweet couple began to ask questions and they soon realized they walked right into my passion. I tried to hold back, tone down my excitement, but that is a hard feat. I was able to share the beauties of what we do. We get to… GET TO… school our kids and dive into their passions. You want Latin and Greek- you got it! You need to slow down a bit with math- yep, we’re on it! You are a kinesthetic learner- let’s draw the number line with chalk in our backyard- hop away… it’s math time! Read-alouds, reciprocal teaching, thematic learning… there are so many amazing advantages to what we do in the academic world, but that is not all.
Crazy About Our Kids
What really got my blood pumping (in addition to the 100 degree water I was sitting in), was when I got to talk about my real passion. Yes, the academic side of things is great, but what I really love is that I get to spend more time with my children training their character! From my perspective, this is the real joy of homeschooling! I love that I know my kids in so many amazing ways. I love that I get front row seats to their development and I am available to them when they need guidance. I love that homeschool provides plenty of opportunities to practice in the real world the heart issues we discuss at home. I love that I have a real relationship with my kids. We talk, we share, we laugh, we cry, we ask questions, we cuddle up on the couch with a good read. These are the moments that I wouldn’t trade for the world! With the foundation of relationship, training our kids’ character becomes much more effective, raw and organic. And our desire is that we are not just educating their mind, but that we are influencing their soul! We GET TO lead them through this educational journey and facilitate them becoming life-long learners!
Or, Are They Crazy?
Now what’s so strange about this? Really? My question instead would be, why aren’t more parents on board with the beauties of homeschool? Maybe they just need passionate homeschoolers to share the real reasons we do what we do. So, don’t shrink back. Don’t allow a strange look to take away the joy we have in what we do. You are making a significant difference in the very significant life of your child. Don’t let the day’s HAVE TOs overwhelm the day’s GET Tos. Go make splashes in the rain, warm up next to the fire for reading time, and enjoy hot cocoa, and marshmallows too!! Relish in what you do Homeschooling Parent because you are in the midst of your most important mission! Some days may go by oh so slowly, but the years… the years, they will be gone before you know it! Homeschool with heart, and influence the hearts of your children!
