Season's Greetings!
#TRAILBLAZEON
Learners. Teachers. Trailblazers.
'Tis the season to give! Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Discovery food drive. Collectively we were able to donate 3,011 items to the Red River Valley Community Action food panty. Special thanks to our student council students for organizing this event and helping to collect and deliver all the food items. In the coming weeks, our student council will be participating in the 11th Annual Community Pajama Drive. Be watching for more information on how you can contribute a pair of pajamas for those in need. Our student council students are excited to have these events return to Discovery School and are doing a fabulous job taking on these leadership opportunities!
Report cards will be emailed to all parents today. At Discovery, we embrace a growth mindset where we recognize students success and teach to their individual learning needs. Discovery teachers use proficiency scales, along with assessments and daily work, to better understand their student's learning of the expected standards. Our standards based report cards are a great way to share what your child has learned as well as identify areas of growth. When reviewing your child's report cards, please take a moment to celebrate their hard work and growth.
Thank you for your support during the first trimester of the school year. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher for further clarification.
Have a joyful holiday season!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Parkinson - Principal
Mr. Kurtyka - Associate Principal

'Tis the season of giving. A message from our school social worker.
A number of families and community members contact me throughout the year to ask how they are able to help serve our families, which is especially true this time of year. The following is a list of identified needs that would always be accepted as donations: snacks, city bus tickets, gas gift cards, and grocery store gift cards. Another great option for assisting our students is to check out Purposity at: https://www.gfschools.org/Page/8712. Purposity is a website that has partnered with our school district to help meet the needs of students. The school social workers will put any student needs up on the website, which is connected to Amazon. It will send the item right to the school to be given to the student! Purposity also opened up the option for us to place holiday gifts for students, so you would have the opportunity to purchase a gift for a student, if you’d like! If you have further questions or donations, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at 701-317-6620.

Attendance Line:
Add this number into your phone contacts! 701-787-4361 Please utilize our attendance line to leave us messages about your children being out of school.
Seesaw:
Seesaw is a wonderful form of communication between classroom teachers and parents. Please ask your student's teacher how to sign up!
Snacks:
A reminder that Discovery is a Peanut Free School. When sending a snack or packing a lunch, please remember to check labels to make sure it does not contain or have traces of peanuts/nuts.
Birthday Treats:
Due to the increase in students who have severe food allergies and the higher levels of severity, we no longer celebrate student birthdays with a “birthday snack” in our schools. Parents are welcome to find other non-food items to send to school if they wish. Please discuss with your child’s classroom teacher for ideas or preferences.
A message from Discovery PTO Treasurer, Katie Edwards:
Hello, I would like to introduce a project our Girl Scout Troop is working on.
Troop #20266 is sponsoring a district wide teacher wish list program. The goal of this project is to assist local elementary teachers by purchasing items they would ordinarily pay for out of pocket. Items teachers request are added to an anonymous wishlist to ensure equity as much as possible across schools in the district. The community is then able to shop directly from the wishlist to support our teachers and students. This project is not just for classroom teachers either! Specialists, special education, counselors, etc can participate, too!
The troop will also be doing supply drives at intervals throughout the year, as well! Our goal is to grow this program to help more educators throughout the district and to help new teachers get started!
Here is a link to the wishlist: https://wishlist.com/l/8J1eLB
Make sure to check the list to see if new requests are available to sponsor!

Substance Use Prevention Tips
Help children separate reality from fantasy. Watch shows or movies with them and ask lots of questions to reinforce the distinction between the two. Remember to include advertising in your discussions, as those messages are especially powerful. Source: https://drugfree.org/
