Principal's Message
I am always amazed at all of the great things that happen as we reach the end of the school year. I encourage you to check out the QMS Master Calendar on our website for the times and dates of specific events. I have also included some updates below:
Thank You to the QMS PAC and our Parents/ Guardians
On behalf of the entire faculty and staff at Qualters, I want to thank our supportive community for the amazing Staff Recognition Brunch this Wednesday. The food was amazing! Thank you for your kindness and support.
Math Placements
Math placement notifications for students entering grades seven and eight next year will be sent home on June 10th. Math placements for current fifth grade students will be mailed home on June 8th. If you have any questions after receiving your child's math placement, please contact their math teacher.
Vaping Presentation
On June 13th, our grade eight students will meet with a representative from the CARON Treatment Center on the dangers and risks of vaping. Nationally, young people engaging in this activity has become a health crisis and a true epidemic. I am grateful that the QMS PAC sponsored this presentation as we look to further educate our students about the risks of vaping.
Summer School
Students who fail ELA, Math, Science, or Social Studies for the year will need to participate in summer school as outlined in our promotion policy. Parents & Guardians of students at risk of failing one of these courses received a warning letter in the mail at the end of the third quarter. Our promotion policy, as outlined on page 26 of the Student Handbook, states:
"Students who fail any of the four major academics (ELA, Math, History/SS, and Science) for the school year (average of all 4 terms), and/or whose attendance does not meet state guidelines may be considered for retention. Students who fail up to two academic courses for the year will be allowed to attend summer school to meet the promotion criterion. Students failing more than two academic courses will be ineligible for summer school and will be retained."
Additionally, on May 30th, we will mail out letters informing parents/ guardians about a voluntary opportunity to participate in summer school for students on pace to earn below a C- (but not an F) in ELA or Math for the year. This letter will only be mailed to those students who meet that criteria. Students who received summer school warning letters at the end of the third quarter that successfully pass for the year are also welcome to participate. Our summer school program costs $250.00 per course with a $25.00 registration fee.
Looping Counselors
Starting next year, we will be "looping" our counselors. Ms. Martin will move up to grade seven with her current students and Ms. Molak will move to grade eight. Ms. Manganaro will become the grade six counselor for the 19-20 school year. This is inline with best practice in school counseling at the middle level. Having a counselor establish long term working relationships with their students has shown to increased achievement.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.
Sincerely,
David McGovern- Principal
Please see the file below for information regarding measles. Our nurses have fielded a lot of questions on the subject.

Grade 8 End of Year Luau
Dear Eighth Grade Parents and Guardians,
As the school year comes to a close, the traditional eighth grade Luau will be held on Tuesday, June 18th. Here is a description of what this event entails:
Event: Hawaiian Luau themed end of middle school party for 8th graders with a DJ and photo booth.
Parents are welcome to take photos in the school courtyard from 6:00 to 6:30pm.
Place: QMS Courtyard for photos and cafeteria for celebration
At 6:30 students will move to the cafeteria to enjoy the celebration. Please note that once students are inside the school building, they will not be permitted to leave the event until 8:30pm, unless a parent dismisses their child.
Tickets: $5 each
Tickets will be sold during eighth grade lunches the week of June eleventh.
Tickets are available only to QMS eighth grade students. Outside guests will not be allowed.
Food: Pizza, chips, and sweets
The chips, sweets, and beverages will be provided through parental donations. Concern for students with allergies is a priority and our sign up for food donations will require all nut-free donations and some gluten and dairy-free options.
Attire:”Snappy Casual”
The luau is a special event and the students may want to dress in a school appropriate, festive manner. As for dresses, simple sundresses, not prom dresses, are luau-theme appropriate. For pants, khakis or nice cargo shorts and a polo are typically worn. We remind families that this is not a prom, but the students are welcome to dress up a bit more than they do for a school day.
Parental Donations and Volunteering:
A link will be sent out after Memorial Day for sign ups. Ways to help are: decorating the cafeteria, donating items, selling tickets in the QMS cafeteria during eighth grade lunches, and cleaning up after the event. Donations for the evening will be needed and much appreciated!
This is a celebration of three years of hard work in the middle school. We are looking forward to wishing the kids well on this night!

Nora McNeilly and Beth Donovan
