Counselor News:
Hello from Lloyd Road Guidance Counselors!
February was a busy month for classroom lessons. Our fifth graders focused on diversity and highlighting the aspects of our lives that make us similar and different. The fifth graders broke into groups and created a flower. The petals spoke of their unique differences while in the center as a group they came up with something that made them the same. The purpose of the activity was to celebrate our uniqueness as individuals while seeking out things that made us the same. It highlighted the 21st Century skills of collaboration, teamwork and communication.
Our fourth graders played a quick change game, where they had to identify changes their partners made about their appearance when they weren’t looking. They were able to compare these physical changes to both positive and negative personality changes or changes in their friends and classmates actions. The fourth graders discussed what to do or who to tell if they noticed some negative changes with friends and how to compliment someone who is making positive changes in their lives. All the fourth graders also participated in the one word challenge, which had them choose a word that will define the rest of the year instead of a New Year’s resolution. For more information go to: http://oneword365.com/.
Lastly, we know the tragedy in Florida as well as some recent threats locally have made some students and parents anxious and stressed. Attached is a PDF from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network on how to talk to children about the shooting. http://www.nctsn.org/sites/default/files/assets/pdfs/talking_to_children_about_the_shooting.pdf. Another resource for parents is from PBS which gives strategies about talking with their children about the news.
