Language Arts
In writing, students are continuing to write and draw about small moments, these are true stories from their own experiences. We are learning that stories are not just one sentence but they have a beginning, middle, and end. Focusing on a small moment we ask what happened next and how did it end, or what happened last. The students are generating ideas, elaborating with pictures and words. We continue to focus on stretching words to be able to hear the beginning, middle and ending sounds. The students use a vowel card to help with using vowels in their writing. We have learned that all words have vowels. We also have a bank of word wall words that students should be using correctly in their writing. The power of re-reading what we have written is priceless. Does it look right? Does it make sense? These are questions writers ask themselves when they re-read what they have written.
Guided reading groups are continuing to happen daily. As always please check your child's little book bag nightly and have them practice their little books and sight words to build fluency. Be sure to practice reading and writing the words on the ring. It is very important that your child returns their little book bags with all the materials to school each day as we use them during our groups too. Remember to ask your child questions about what they have read. Reading is more than just being able to read the words, being able to talk about what you have read is very important.
In comprehension we are continuing to work on identifying story elements; characters, setting, problem and solution in literary text. We will begin to discuss retelling stories using the important parts in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Enjoy reading a story at home, discuss and draw the story elements with your child. We are also working with non-fiction/ informational texts and discussing how the author and illustrator need to work together to make the book. We have been reading the words and talking about how the pictures match the words. We have learned how to use the pictures and other words in the book to help us figure out what some unknown words mean.
