BECOMING MARIA By Sonia Manzano...this is the story of a girl with a dream. Emmy award-winning actress and writer Sonia Manzano plunges us into the daily lives of a Latino family that is loving--and troubled...Each day she is glued to the TV screen that blots out the painful realities of her existence and also illuminates the possibilities that lie ahead. But--click!--when the TV goes off, Sonia is taken back to real-life--the cramped, colorful world of her neighborhood and an alcoholic father. But it is Sonia's dream of becoming an actress that keeps her afloat...this memoir paints a lasting portrait of a girl's resilience as she grows up to become an inspiration to millions.” GoodReads

EL NORTE By Carrie Gibson “The Hispanic past of the United States predates the arrival of the Pilgrims by a century, and has been every bit as important in shaping the nation as it exists today. El Norte chronicles the sweeping and dramatic history of Hispanic North America from the arrival of the Spanish in the early 16th century to the present—from Ponce de Leon’s initial landing in Florida in 1513 to Spanish control of the vast Louisiana territory in 1762 to the Mexican-American War in 1846 and up to the more recent tragedy of post-hurricane Puerto Rico and the ongoing border acrimony with Mexico.” GoodReads

DISTRICT 303 NEWS:

THE PANORAMA SEL SURVEY FOR GRADES 3-12

Community Unit School District 303

201 S. 7th Street, St. Charles, IL 60174-2664 ◦ (331) 228-2000 ◦ www.d303.org

August 2021

Dear Parent/Guardian,

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 strives to provide all students with the best opportunity to succeed academically, socially, and behaviorally in school. As part of this commitment, District 303 is enhancing our Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) across the district for the 2021-2022 school year.

This year, students in grades 3-12 will be completing a universal screening tool to assess their social and emotional learning skills. The use of universal screening allows us to refine and strengthen our efforts to help all students achieve success by taking positive and preventative measures as early as possible. This also provides us with the opportunity to assist students who may need additional support with social and emotional learning.

One of the universal screening tools used by the District is the Panorama SEL Survey, which focuses on the following areas:

  • Self-Management

  • Emotional Regulation

  • Social Awareness

  • Grit

  • Self Efficacy

  • Sense of Belonging

  • Teacher-Student Relationship

The Panorama SEL Survey will be completed two times this school year during the weeks of September 27th to October 8th and March 14th to 25th. If a screening shows that a student will benefit from additional skill development, parents will be contacted and will work in collaboration with school staff to problem-solve and determine next steps.

Additional information about this screener and other assessments in District 303 may be found on our website at https://district.d303.org/departments/assessment. Thank you for your support and assistance in ensuring each of our students has the opportunity to achieve academic and social-emotional success.

Please feel free to contact your building principal or me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

David Chiszar

Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability

Agosto 2021

Sinceramente,

David Chiszar

Director Ejecutivo de Evaluación y Responsabilidad
