Third Grade News from Mrs. C
Oct. 5th-9th
Tidbits From the Teacher
Hi Everyone-
We are entering our final week of "Fill the Boot" PTA fundraiser. We've had several students bring in money from their family and some have brought in money from their allowance to help make our school better! Talk about showing civic pride and wanting to participate in the community- Wow!
I took some pictures of our class as we worked on a scavenger hunt to find physical properties of matter in our outdoor classroom. Sommer PTA paid for the supplies and plants that were used to create that learning spot. The money you give is much appreciated by the students and teachers alike!! It helps fund many, many wonderful causes and needs across our campus.
On another note- during class, students were discussing the theme for Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Some felt she showed courage for entering a strange house while others felt she shouldn't have gone in the house in the first place. One child piped up and said, "She broke an amendment by entering their house. You aren't supposed to do a search and seizure without permission." = touche my student.

What We're Studying and Learning...
Reading- Students will continue to work on theme, character development, and summaries. We have begun working on more independent projects with these concepts and students are having fun debating what theme matches the plot or character development. It's fun to listen to their conversations.
Handwriting- We started cursive late in the week so we'll practice it a bit more then move into the cursive d.
Writing- Students will continue to work on personal narrative stories and write one for a quick check for district data. This is a short assignment to see where they are in their understandings and will not be for a grade. I will look at this piece of writing when completing conference forms along with my observations from other work samples.
PBL- We have written our letters and now wait to hear back from all included parties.
Math- Students will return to their work with place value and 4 digit numbers. While we will look at numbers to 9,999- I plan on introducing to the ten thousands. Students have begun to use their rubrics to self-grade their work and guide them as they complete problems. Everyone is trying to take ownership in his/her learning. More questions are being asked, students are listening a little closer, and they are starting to take notes when we share and compare work on problems. Yeah!
Science- Students will be exploring the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. As students conduct exploration activities in groups, they will be developing their scientific inquiry and discovery skills. We've learned about physical properties and explored with stations using solids, liquids and gases. Next up is more research, exploration, and a test at the end of the week that will not need reviewing or study time from home.
