Take Away Ideas from Visiting Classrooms
Prepare a unit packet for centers.
Great atmosphere, anchor charts, & inviting environment.
A second grade student was reflecting on how his behavior had been since arriving at school that morning. He had to choose (red-sad face, yellow-straight face, green-smiley face). He self reflected with the help of the teacher on selecting which face represented his behavior. Each portion of his day had been assigned a time to evaluate his behavior and if he earned a certain amount of points, he earned candy corns throughout the day. This form will now be coming with this student to speech/language services in hopes that his behavior is improved in that environment as well. Both teachers will collaborate to determine if this behavior modification is working.
Setting up a weekly (as Mrs. Brady does) or perhaps every other week meeting with Mrs. Hammer may be the best way to help reach my technology goals. ;)
Love the idea of modules (would love to do this again).
using proximity with a specific group of students to increase student engagement.
Some of what is done in her classroom are also some things we have in 4th grade. Rotations in reading, free seating during reading, book club discussions at teacher table. It is nice to see the students have some familiar surroundings.
If we had one to one chromebooks, I would incorporate modules for my students.
I could do more writing in stations.
Next year use my Friday binders as writing binders, and I plan to use Seesaw with my students and recording their writing to then share with their parents to see and listen to them read them aloud and give responses back.
I will be discussing further with her how to set up things on Canvas for them. I like how she has her rotations posted on the Smart Board.
I would like to offer more technology options for word word stations.
Writing friendly letters to community members.
Growth mindset--Lindsey is very positive and the way she interacts with students encourages them to believe in themselves and know that they can always grow.
Incorporating fact fluency stations
Take time for down time; brain breaks!
Alternative seating at the carpet allows for student to be active but focused vs making the choice for them to be still sitting criss-cross applesauce. I typically think of only alternative seating during independent work time.
In my classroom we discussed Veterans' Day. They were interested in sharing veterans that they knew. I wish that I would have had them talk with their families about veterans before we discussed it in class.
Incorporating more student involvement in my mini-lessons to ensure a higher level of engagement.
Students were writing a diary about their "trip to America" on their chromebooks. They basically had some of the information already written on a form and they could add the specialized information to their diary as it pertained to them. This would be a great idea for lower students needing more help writing.
She wears a scarf during reading group time to signal to other students they should ask 3 students before asking her a question. I could use this idea for the first part of library. :)
Susan shared her method for collecting data for Rethink (the SPED department's web-based data collection system. She had color-coded cards (each color corresponded to a different goal area). This made is more efficient for her paras to help collect student data.
Let students do all that they can buy themselves before giving assistance.
