What The Book Is About

Halley and Scarlett have been best friends for years, sharing secrets, clothes, and crushes. People know Scarlett as the popular, flamboyant one; Halley’s just her quiet sidekick. Then, at the beginning of their junior year, the balance shifts. First, Scarlett’s boyfriend Michael is killed in a freak accident; soon afterward, she learns that she is carrying his baby. For the first time, Scarlett really needs Halley. Their friendship may bend under the weight, but it’ll never break–because a true friendship is a promise you keep forever. Sarah Dessen’s poignant, funny voice has earned her raves and legions of teenaged fans.

Life Lesson

    • Your life can change at the blink of an eye, so don’t take it for granted.

    • A true friendship is needed through really hard times.

A Changed Life

Everyone’s life at one point is tough. I know from experience. In this book, two girls experience something they never thought they would experience during high school. Your life is short and you only have one life to live, so making it count is really important. Losing people in my life has taught me that life is very short and you need to live it to its fullest. “…a boy I hardly knew, whose death now seemed to mean everything” (Dessen 10). Through these hard times you need people surrounding you with love and support. Halley and Scarlett have just the perfect relationship; best friends. “But now, I had Scarlett. And from that day on, nothing ever looked the same” (Dessen 8). Through all of the times I have been through things, I have always had someone there to love and support me through everything that I went through. Things happen that you can’t go back and change. Scarlett would soon realize that once she found out that she is carry a baby that she shares with her deceased boyfriend. “She nodded, biting her lip. ‘I’m pregnant’” (Dessen 96). Things will now change for her as she becomes a single mom at the age of 16. Her life changed the day that she met her boyfriend and nothing ever seemed to be the same for her again.
