Student Active Participation

In the coming weeks we will review our feedback from ABRI's Fall Coding visit. The data has been shared with the ABRI team and one piece that I want to get everyone thinking about is not new, but desperately needed--active, student engagement!

The coders shared that our teachers give opportunities for the whole group to respond to a question every 1.27 minutes. That is frequent response. But, the rate of invitation to an INDIVIDUAL student to respond was 1 per 14.29 minutes. Which means if a child is not participating in the group response, s/he could potentially "sit" for 14.29 minutes before becoming engaged.

How can we improve our invitations for students to respond and be accountable to their own engagement? Invite EVERY PUPIL to RESPOND as often as possible. In the link below there is an A-Z list of ways to engage every student--some require prior preparation (Yes/No cards, whiteboards, colored cards to match teacher choices, pair/share strategies) but are techniques that, once learned, can be used across content areas to keep students engaged and accountable for their learning!

Math Situations to Deepen Understanding

The units in the link below are samples from Context for Learning Mathematics. Check them out and let me know what you think. Each unit is two weeks long and includes a literature experience and a situation that allows for students to apply their newly learned math skills/concepts. Let me know what you think!

Classroom Expectations

Remember to RETEACH expectations following a break. This will be time well spend in the coming months. Common area lesson plans, videos and materials are in the Southside 2015-16 shared Google doc.
