CSCS Elem Panthergram!
September 13th, 2020
A Message from Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Proudfoot
I hope that your child had a great start to the school year! I know that all of us at school were beyond excited and loved having everyone back! I love this picture of one of our first grade students smiling ear to ear underneath that Panther mask! There are some great pictures in this Smore of our amazing students and teachers as we started to re-connect and build the foundations of a great school year!
Please note that since there is a plethora of information for parents that we want you all to have easy access to, we are formatting the parent Smore Panthergram newsletters to have the newest information first, and then at the end of the Smore information that parents may need as a reference at a later time. This Smore's most notable updates are:
- School Info App - Information on how to use and set up the School info app to communicate with your child's teacher and to get important information from the school.
- Remote Learning Expectations - Please check out Mrs. Proudfoots read aloud about remote online learning for kids! This is a great thing to watch with your kids:)
- ROARS PBIS Welcome Back Kick Off! - We were unable to have a huge assembly for our students to kick of ROARS this year, so our teachers made a video for our kick off!
- Updates and expectations for Remote Learning - Mrs. Gill provided an update of expectations for 100% remote students as they start to log in and engage in instruction.
- Updates Regarding Parent Pick-up and Dismissal procedures - We are continuing to hone in our procedures for parent pick up.
- Health, Safety, and Attendance Procedures - The District is working very hard to navigate the Department of Health regulations and will continue to update and revise our procedures as more information is given to us. We all empathize with how hard this can be, but we have power in our community to take care of each other. Panther Strong!
- Updates from the PTO and Fundraising - The PTO has several ways to help fundraise for the school!
Tomorrow will be your chid's first whole class Zoom meeting (Zoom schedules are in the Smore). This will be an awesome time for your child to catch up with everyone in the class, see the teacher, and set up expectations for the week!
As we continue to move into our hybrid model, we will continue to grow our skills and revise as is needed to make the absolute best educational experience possible for our students.
Panther Strong!!!
Online Learning - How to set up your home and prepare for learning!
P.A.W.S.
Our PBIS team has met and created PAWS posters along with formal lesson plans for our faculty to teach and reinforce PAWS in our school! As parents, you can start at home before we start school to get your child acclimated to PAWS and being safe around others!
Below is the addendum to our CSCS Code of Conduct which explains in more detail the expectations of safety.
Check out our PBIS ROARS Welcome Back to School Celebration kick off!
Dismissal Parent Pick-Up Procedures
- Parents picking up their children will park in the visitor parking lot and enter by the side cafeteria doors.
- Cafeteria doors will open to allow parents in at 2:25.
- All parents must wear a face covering when in the school at all times. There will also be a hand sanitizing station on the wall as you enter the school. Please utilize this.
- Every parent must sign his/her child out and then exit through the Rt226 doors thus allowing a continuous one way flow of traffic through the school.
- Students in 4th grade and above may leave school without being signed out with prior parent permission. They will be asked to exit out of the Rt 226 doors.
- Students in grades PreK-3rd may leave with an older child (4th grade and above) with prior parent permission - A note sent to the office.
- Please note - Headstart, Ms. Giardinias, class will be pickup up at the Rt 226 doors in the Gymnasium foyer.
School Info App - Communicating with your child's teacher(s)
One important way to get messages from your child's teacher and to make sure that you are getting updates from the school is to go to "My Alerts". Once in "my alerts" make sure that "Enable Push Notifications" is turned on and that all of the buttons are turned "on".
Next... look at the bottom of the screen, you will see the picture of a bell next two an icon of two people. Click on the icon of the 2 people. This will then bring up teachers names along with icons to turn on notifications. Search out your child's teacher(s) and turn on those notifications.
If you would like to send your child a message, go back to the main screen and click "conversations" this then works just like text messaging on your smart phone.
Health, Safety, and Attendance Procedures
It has been wonderful seeing students back in our school buildings! The murmur of students walking through the halls, teachers voices projecting in their classrooms, and seeing children playing on our playgrounds have been the most joyful experiences for all of us at Campbell Savona!
This summer, we worked together tirelessly with many community members to build a health and safety plan that followed each and every guideline required by the New York State Department of Health. The purpose of this work was not only to ensure that we can continue to teach your children in-person but, most importantly, so we can keep our students and staff safe! Although the guidelines and procedures are stringent, it is imperative we follow them to ensure safety.
Please take some time to review the following documents as a reminder of our district re-opening plans. Additionally, we have uploaded all required follow-up forms for absences, illnesses, and COVID-19 symptom follow-up to our district website on the health office department page.
Here are a few things to remember:
- For EVERY absence, the parent must submit a completed C-S Absence Excuse (accessible from our district website).
- If your child is absent due to an illness, you must speak to the school nurse to determine the appropriate follow-up.
- If your child exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms, after all requirements for return have been completed, a parent/guardian must transport the student back to school with all completed paperwork. You may enter through the main office and we will collect the paperwork, screen your child, and they will be allowed to return to school.
- If a student exhibits any symptom of COVID-19, whether being sent home from school or at home, the siblings and household members must be sent home to isolate until it is clear the ill child has completed the required follow-up.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your building principal, the school nurse, or the health office administrator!

What will students be doing on "Remote" Days
Through many conversations and parent feedback, we at school understand that due to every families unique circumstances that providing flexibility is very important. This is why we worked very hard to have as little time strictly scheduled as possible. We this in mind, the only weekly scheduled time for ALL students to log onto Zoom and attend class will be on Mondays with their entire class (All teams! Red, White, and Blue!). Each grade level will have a specific time to log on so that they can, in real time, talk to their classmates and teacher. This time will be shared prior to school starting. This will also be a critical time for students to hear about the lesson objectives of the week, assignments due, and to have fun communicating with their classmates.
Everyday Expectation - Every student must log on to his/her digital classroom (Seesaw or Google Classroom) and complete the attendance form prior to 2pm.
Mondays - Required classroom Zoom to keep connections with the entire class and teacher, and to get the lesson objectives for the week and assignments that will be due.
Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday Remote Days - These days will allow parents and students flexibility in which they can help support their child at any time during the day because the lessons will be pre-recorded and available on Seesaw (PreK-2) and Google Classroom (3-6) along with the assignments and teacher feedback. The only time requirement on these days is that every student must log on to his/her digital classroom and click on the attendance form so attest that they are "in attendance" for the school day by 2pm. It is a state requirement that the school must take attendance every day. We will be practicing all of these procedures and processes with our students on the first day of school!
Since teachers will actively have students in their classrooms Tuesday-Friday; therefore making themselves unavailable for students learning remotely from home, there will be a set time for "office hours" via zoom and telephone in which teaching assistants and special education teachers will be available to help students and parents. You will be notified of these times as the school year begins.
Individualized Expectations - In order to provide a multi-tiered system of support for our students, your child's teacher/special education teacher/grade level Teaching Assistant may reach out to set up specific times with your child to hold small group Zoom meetings to support differentiated and individualized instruction as is needed.
Cafeteria - Extra Food Pay System: PaySchools
Previously, the district used the PaySchools Online Payment Processing System for its online payment system, and as of Fall 2020, this version of PaySchools used by the district is no longer being supported by PaySchools. Therefore, the district has upgraded its online payments to PaySchools’ sister company SchoolPay. SchoolPay is the leading education payment system and is used all over the U.S. by Houston, Seattle, Portland Public Schools, and many others. With this change, you will be able to:
● Create an account specific to you and your students
● Make payments for all of your students at the district, even if they attend different schools
● Make one-time payments to your student’s lunch account, review cafeteria purchase history, and configure a low balance action to notify you or process an automatic payment when the balance is low
● Store a credit/debit card in your account for later use
● Pay for other school-related items (if made available by the district)
● View a history of all payments made through your SchoolPay account
If you had a previous account through PaySchools, all of your information and your account balance has been transferred over to SchoolPay. Simply go to www.schoolpay.com to get started! We have attached directions on how to activate your account. Multiple parents, guardians, grandparents, etc. are able to create their own SchoolPay accounts for the same student. Payment data and other sensitive account information is never shared across parent/guardian accounts.
We are excited for you to join SchoolPay and get started making payments in a quicker and easier way. You can call SchoolPay with any questions at 888-886-9729, or email them at support@schoolpay.com

Face Coverings - Basic Expectations
The topic of face coverings (masks) has been a part of our presentations as we have been preparing for the first days of school. The District's "Day in the Life" of a CSCSD student explains this in a fun way!
Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Proudfoot handed out the donated PTO face masks the first day of school. It was awesome to see how excited our students were!
For some basic expectations, please refer to the following general bullets below.
- Students will be expected to wear face coverings in all common areas and hallways.
- Students may take off a face covering when sitting at his/her seat in the classroom and cafeteria.
- Students and teachers must put on a face covering when working in small groups closer than 6 feet from one another as they interact with each other in the classroom.
- Teachers will help to prompt students when it is time to put on face coverings and also to take them off.

More Support For Families From Outside Services
ProAction Inc. - FIRST AND FOREMOST: CHILD CARE
Finding Child Care: We understand you are fielding a lot of questions about child care. Please direct families to call our Child Care Aware program at 607-776-2126 and ask for Michelle Smith. Michelle is there as a resource to connect families with child care options that fit their needs. If we can get people to use this as the primary way that parents seek information on child care, it also serves as a data collection mechanism to gain insight on the particulars of the need in our community. Establishing the need will help us as we work with partners on defining creative solutions and accessing the resources to implement them. We plan to involve you in those conversations as strategies are being brainstormed.
THE LAURA RICHARDSON HOUGHTON CORNING YOUTH CENTER PREPARES TO HELP YOUTH AND FAMILIES NAVIGATE THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
CORNING, NY – September 4, 2020 – The Laura Richardson Houghton Corning Youth Center looks a little different right now. Since the 1980’s it has been a constant presence in the local community as a drop-in center for all youth during their after-school hours. Since early July, the Center has been able to re-open its door under the NY State COVID 19 guidelines for recreational programs.
Now, to best serve the community, the Laura Richardson Houghton Corning Youth Center will remain open for the foreseeable future from 8:00am-6:00pm daily for youth ages 8-18. This will allow youth, on days they are not attending in-person classes, to complete their virtual lessons and homework in a safe place with Youth Center staff providing a structured format. However, only a limited number of youth will be accepted into the program at this time in order to assure social distancing and safety guidelines. There is no charge for this enhanced programming.
Youth accepted to the program will take part in a structured school format at the Youth Center from 8:00am-2:30pm on days that they are not participating in in-person classes at their actual school building. Youth will be asked to bring their school-provided lunches on the days they are at the Center. An alternative location to the Youth Center will also be available, if needed, to host more students on their virtual learning days.
From 2:30pm-6:00pm, the Youth Center will offer a variety of activities including outdoor recreation opportunities, arts and crafts lessons, tutoring, and other special programming. The Kids Café will provide after-school snacks and dinner to all participants free of charge. The Youth Center will be accepting applications for just the afterschool drop-in center, as well, in compliance with NY State recreational program re-opening guidelines (based on space available).
Parents and guardians interested in signing up their children to take part in the Corning Youth Center’s new school year programming should submit an online registration form which can be found at www.familyservicesociety.org. Please call the Youth Center at 936-4116 with any questions.
