FFA State Convention
On Wednesday May 1, several members of the Genoa-Penta FFA Chapter traveled down to Columbus to attend the 91st annual Ohio State FFA Convention. Upon traveling they stopped at Skate Zone 71 for roller skating and laser tagging then went to the Iron Grill Barbecue for a fantastic dinner. Thursday was filled with Proficiency awards and the chapter receiving their 2nd Gold Rated Chapter award. Bobby Bench placed 1st and 2nd in his categories, Andrew Bench placed 3rd, Tyler Traver placed 2nd and 4th, and graduate Mason Hogan placed 2nd. The members also got to tour the Anthony Thomas Chocolate Factory. On Friday, Amanda Partin received her Gold Rated Secretary Award and Jordan Iffland received her Gold Rated Reporter Award. Darcie Goodman, Brady Linker, and Austin Marley (represented by Kasey Kuhlman due to boot camp) all received their State Degrees. It was a fun-filled week and the members represented Genoa proudly. Draft Day
Seniors, Alex Duran and Shawn Streight, participated in the Associated General Contractor's of NW Ohio's Draft Day event on Thursday, May 9. These two seniors are planning on entering an apprenticeship program after high school. The event was held at the Armory in downtown Toledo above Fleetwood's restaurant in Hensville. 97 students from NW Ohio participated in the event. Students were able to meet, network, and interview with contractors from the region. Lt. Governor John Husted was the guest speaker, and each student got to meet him. Draft Day has doubled since its inception last year. It is a fantastic opportunity for students entering the trades to meet potential employers. An apprenticeship allows you to work and earn a paycheck while taking classes for free. Finding a job is the first step, and all 97 students who participated have a tremendous advantage in beginning their career. Congratulations, Alex and Shawn!

Catching up with Comets ~ Mike Benadum
This is a new section that we have added to showcase and highlight the wonderful things Genoa graduates are doing in their selective career fields. The college and career ready component is something that Genoa high school is striving to focus on as we prepare students for a future. We hope that these thoughts and highlights shared will help spread some wisdom obtained by Genoa high school past graduates.
Mr. Mike Benadum was a 1982 Genoa High School graduate who was willing to share some knowledge about his career choice.
What was one good memory from high school that students today may enjoy hearing from your high school days?
Friday nights!! The atmosphere those nights created in the Comet Nation at the football and basketball games was absolutely thrilling, inspiring, and just plain fun!! The spirit, enthusiasm, and love for our team and school was nothing short of electrifying! It created this life-long admiration for not only our school, but our community!! No matter where we end up geographically, we will always be COMET STRONG!!
After high school what path led you to where you are today? (After HS until Today)
I am a Battalion Fire Chief with the Toledo Fire-Rescue Department (26.5 years). I am the man who has wanted to be a firefighter from birth! I started hanging around the fire station in Genoa when I was 12, and I was blessed enough to have been embraced by the membership there. They were a group of some of the finest men and mentors you could ask for! It was there guidance that provided me with the inspiration to pursue that profession at the career level. Any success I enjoy today is because of those fine Genoa men, all leaders in their own right!!
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to retire in six years. After retirement, I plan to continue my fire service career through continuing to be a fire instructor through a community college fire science program.
What would be one word of advice that you have for high school students now at Genoa?
First, believe in yourself! Be kind, be honest, decide on a career path that is right for YOU! Pursue your dreams!! Always dream, always pursue your dreams!!
