Counselor's Corner & Character Counts! CARING

Last month students learned about fairness, and in the month March students will be learning about caring. As a reminder, character education starts at home through teaching, reinforcing, advocating, and modeling positive character behaviors.

Caring: displaying kindness ~ showing concern for others ~ empathizing with others ~ responding to the needs and suffering of others ~ promoting peace and harmony ~ helping others

Here are some ways you can teach caring at home:

  • Modeling caring behaviors such as: asking how someone is doing

  • Explain why empathizing with others helps encourage caring

  • Talk with children about their feelings and what feelings others may have

  • Practice and encourage doing acts of service that show caring for others

  • Recognize and verbalize when your child is acting out of caring

  • Read a book about caring such as: “Bear Feels Sick” or “The Can Man” or “A Chair for My Mother” or “The Lady in the Box”

  • Talk about caring during dinner or before bed

  • Have conversations about caring that are related to your child’s favorite tv show, movie, book, video game, etc.

  • Explain that caring starts with our observations and thoughts, and is shown through our words and actions towards others
