Counselor's Corner & Character Counts! CARING
Last month students learned about fairness, and in the month March students will be learning about caring. As a reminder, character education starts at home through teaching, reinforcing, advocating, and modeling positive character behaviors.
Caring: displaying kindness ~ showing concern for others ~ empathizing with others ~ responding to the needs and suffering of others ~ promoting peace and harmony ~ helping others
Here are some ways you can teach caring at home:
Modeling caring behaviors such as: asking how someone is doing
Explain why empathizing with others helps encourage caring
Talk with children about their feelings and what feelings others may have
Practice and encourage doing acts of service that show caring for others
Recognize and verbalize when your child is acting out of caring
Read a book about caring such as: “Bear Feels Sick” or “The Can Man” or “A Chair for My Mother” or “The Lady in the Box”
Talk about caring during dinner or before bed
Have conversations about caring that are related to your child’s favorite tv show, movie, book, video game, etc.
Explain that caring starts with our observations and thoughts, and is shown through our words and actions towards others
