Do not stay on your couch too long! There are things to do!
Quotes to keep you motivated:
An inspirational story of a man who has lived through war and economic depression. Captain Tom Moore originally aimed to raise just £1,000 for NHS (National Health Services) Charities Together by completing laps of his garden before his 100th birthday. He has raised over
£17m. Please check out his inspirational story and how his act of service helped his community during the pandemic
Acts of Kindness
Some activities you could do that allow for social distancing include doing yard work for a senior or a neighbor, walking to the cemetery and cleaning up a monument, or walking to a friend's or relative's house and waving from outside to cheer them up :)
If you have any stories or pictures that you would like to share we would love to hear them!

Surprising Health Benefits of Gardening
https://healthtalk.unchealthcare.org/health-benefits-of-gardening/
According to the World Health Organization, good health means more than just the absence of bad health symptoms. It means the presence of positive emotions, quality of life, sense of community and happiness. (WHO 1948)
1. Home Grown Self-Esteem - Tending to a garden, watching the plants grow and produce can bring a great sense of accomplishment.
2. Gardening for Physical Health - You are burning calories and strengthening your heart when you are out in your garden. Not to mention a lot of squats and grip strength when you are weeding :-)
3. Gardening Reduces Stress - A Dutch study asked two groups of people to complete a stressful task and concluded that gardening for 30 minutes after said task resulted in lower cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone associated with stress. Had a rough day? Get in your garden and let the stress melt away.
4. Happiness in the Dirt - Studies suggest that inhaling M. vaccae, a healthy bacteria that lives in soil, can increase levels of serotonin and reduce anxiety.
5. Gardening for Family Health - The happiness and stress relief that gardening provides is a great thing to share with loved ones. I know my boys love to plant seeds and raid my garden! Some studies have shown that early exposure to dirt has been linked to all kinds of long-term health benefits, from reducing allergies to autoimmune diseases.
Fitness and Wellness Challenge - Start a garden
What can this challenge look like:
- Help your family plant the garden - I know my boys love to have their own little space to watch their seeds grow.
- Find a pot and plant a tomato or a herb or a flower......... Plant the seeds/transplant the seedling and water it. Put it in a place with a lot of sun and watch your hard work pay off.
- Find a routine and help weed, water and/fertilize your plants. Get outside - leave your room - take a wellness break from your studies and tend to your garden.
- Does getting on a tractor and helping your family seed /spray/harvest work for this challenge...........sure :-) Not quite the same thing but who am I to place limits on how big your garden should be (hahahaha)
This is not an overnight challenge. This can take up several months. Let me know what you have planned and send me updates on how your garden is doing (pictures/videos/written reports). I would love to know how your garden is doing.
