CARRIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
June is also Caribbean American Heritage Month which recognizes the history and culture of Caribbean Americans in the United States. During this time, Caribbean Americans or individuals with Caribbean American heritage will come together to celebrate their history through a variety of activities including traditional meals, festivals, concerts, dancing, parades, etc.
LGBTQ+ PRIDE MONTH
LGBTQ+ Pride Month is commemorated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQ Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQ Americans. Today, LGBTQ Pride Month celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, and concerts, attracting millions of participants from around the world.
JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth took place on June 19, 1865, when all enslaved people in Texas were liberated. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued at the start of 1863, the news didn’t reach all states or enslaved persons until over two years later. Today, 47 states and D.C. recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or observance.
