From the desk of Principal Ruiz

CIA Parents, Guardians and Scholars,

This week our scholars celebrated and honored our Volleyball City Champions with a special luncheon and Championship medals.

The 4th grade scholars competed in a marshmallow catapult science project. What a "sweet" way to learn about motion, force, energy, measurement, and math calculation.

Our 5th grade scholars learned about Native Americans and ancient dwellings. Each scholar created a 3D dwelling or poster to represent their newfound knowledge.

Mr. Bentley and his scholars planted perennials in the CIA courtyard this week. This is one of the many ways our scholars give to the CIA school community.

We encourage all parents to join us on November 1st for the first PTSO meeting of the school year. CIA is in need of parents that are willing to join the organization as an officer. Mark your calendars and plan to learn more about ways in which you can be more involved at the 5:30 meeting that will be held in the cafe.

New CIA Spirit Wear has been added to the online store. Purchase now so that your scholar has the opportunity to show school spirit!

All MPY scholars (grades 7th - 8th) will have the opportunity to participate in the first Storybook Character Day that is scheduled for October 31st! This day has been designed to ignite a love for literacy. Our MYP scholars are welcome to select their favorite picture book and dress as a character in the story (the character costume may be worn for the entire school day). Your 7th/8th grade scholar will have the opportunity to read the previously selected picture book to a small group of PYP (Kindergarten - 5th grade) scholars during their scheduled Language Arts class. The only requirements for the MYP scholar to participate will include a passing grade (C or higher) in Language Arts from the first quarter and submission and approval of the book choice. 7th/8th grade MYP scholars received the digital participation form on Tuesday, October 16th. The participation form must be complete and submitted no later than Tuesday, October 23rd. We encourage each 7th/8th grade MYP scholar to share their love for literacy with our PYP scholars on October 31st!

Our CIA Cougars will have the opportunity to donate spare change to support "Collecting for a Cure". The weeks of October 22nd - 31st, our Cougars are encouraged to bring their spare change to support breast cancer awareness. The money raised will benefit a CIA family that is currently battling breast cancer in addition to local families that are fighting cancer. We encourage all Cougars to donate spare change to support those in need.

The CIA team would like to thank the PTSO for their contribution and support at the Parent/Teacher conferences this week. Be sure to join us for the first PTSO meeting that will be held on Thursday, November 1st in the CIA cafe at 5:30 P.M.

Have a wonderful weekend!

With scholars in mind,

Ms. Angela Ruiz, Ph.D. Candidate, Ed.S.

Trick of Treat Hours in South Bend

South Bend supports Trick or Treating from 5:00 - 7:00. CIA acknowledges that Halloween is a night of fun and fright, but it does require extra caution when it comes to keeping your little monsters safe. We encourage those that wish to allow their scholars to participate in Trick or Treat activities, to follow these Halloween safety tips to help avoid common accidents and dangers.

Does your scholar wish to ride a bus they have NOT been assigned to?

If your scholar desires to ride an alternative bus home from school, the following steps MUST be followed:

1. CIA must receive a note from the parent/guardian requesting a bus change, no later than 10:00 A.M.

2. CIA must receive a note from the parent/guardian granting permission for a scholar to visit their home, via the bus, no later than 10:00 A.M.

3. The scholar must have permission from the main office to be placed on an alternate bus for the day.

An alternate bus will ONLY be granted if a note from BOTH families is received at the beginning of the day AND once the school has verified that there is adequate seating on the desired bus.

This expectation is in place to keep all scholars safe in transition home from school. Thank you for adhering to the CIA safeguards.

A Salute to Veterans

Did you know that November 11th marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended WWI? November 11th was selected as Veteran's Day because of the significance of the treaty that was signed on this day, 100 years ago. This year will be our 99th Veteran's Day! If you would like to spend some time learning about the end of WWI with your scholar, click here.

The CIA Cougars aim to honor those who fought during WWI and who are currently members of any branch of the US Military. Please email the names of your family members that have served or are currently serving in any of the Armed forces to Mrs. Pol so that we may include them in the recognition ceremony that will take place on Monday, November 12, 2018.

One more reason to SMILE!

Great news! CIA has partnered with Smile Programs…the mobile dentists that offers in-school dental care.

Permission slips were sent home this week. However, you may click here sign your scholar up online.

Even better, Smile dental care is usually at no cost to you. All insurance is accepted including Medicaid and CHIP. For those without insurance, a low cost self-pay option is available. Convenient and comfortable - our in-school dental program saves you time and provides a safe and comfortable place for your scholar to receive gentle dental care from licensed local professionals. Dental care includes a complete dental exam, x-rays, cleaning, fluoride and sealants when necessary, and in some cases, restorative care such as fillings. Dental care for a healthy life Children who see a dentist regularly may have fewer health issues like:

● Early tooth loss caused by dental decay

● Gum disease

● Heart disease

● Impaired speech development

Help keep your scholar healthy, in school and learning...we encourage you to consider dental care for your scholar with the partnership offered at CIA.

If you have any questions please contact the school nurse, Ms. Moore at (574) 393-4319.

Gather your Box Tops to raise money for CIA

Yes, it is true...if our CIA families collect box tops, we earn money.

Here is how this works: CIA families, every time you use a General Mills product, cut off the BoxTop label and send it to school with your scholar. 400 scholars X 10 BoxTops per scholar = $400 for CIA! This is a fantastic opportunity because there is no need to purchase anything special. Many families end up with General Mills products in their homes after a trip to the store. We encourage each family to ask your friends, relatives and neighbors to do the same. Begin your search for the Box Top label! A collection box will be placed in the main office; please send all labels to school with your scholar.
