Southworth Community Belonging Survey
At Yelm Community Schools, we value our partnership with families and the community. It is important that all of our students and families feel a sense of belonging when entering our schools or working with our staff.
We are asking families to complete a survey to help us understand how families feel, and help us understand what we can do to make sure that all feel welcome in our district. This survey will give us important information. Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback.
The survey will be open from March 29th - April 13th. You will have this available at conferences and on our website.
When responding to the statements, please choose one response. The responses measure how often the statement is true, from Always True to Not At All True.
Child Protection Unit with Mr. Harrison
After Spring Break, Mr. Harrison, School Counselor, will be conducting important Child Protection Unit lessons to help students learn and practice multiple ways to keep themselves safe. Please look out for informational letters coming home with your students prior to Spring Break regarding these lessons and contact Mr. Harrison with any questions you may have.
Dear Family,
We are using the Second Step Social Emotional Learning program in your child’s classroom, which teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school.
A component of this program includes the Second Step Child Protection Unit, which teaches the following skills:
· Personal Safety. Students will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns,
sharp tools, fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help
them decide if something is safe or not.
· Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and
to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
· Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an
adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of
unsafe situations.
These will be taught in the coming weeks. If you have any questions about the Child Protection Unit or the Second Step program, or if you do not want your child to participate in these lessons, please let me know.
I can be reached at jordan_harrison@ycs.wednet.edu or 360-522-9040.
Sincerely,
Jordan Harrison, Counselor
