Kleckner's Korner
April 12, 2021
- Do they have routines and procedures in place for when students finish early?
- Why did this many kids finish early, was the rigor in place?
- Was their lesson objective clearly stated?
- Was their first (tier one) instruction completely clear to students?
- Are all of the students' questions the same? If so, it's clearly me not them.
- Did they set up their aggressive monitoring laps so the expectations (success criteria) are clear to all of the students?
If your class looks like this more often than not, it might be good to reflect and see how you can get them all back into the pond (desks).
Turn and Talk
Today I had the opportunity to visit Mrs. Brooker's classroom. She had the students turn and talk about what inferencing means. The students got started and you heard a few mumbles and whispers. Then she put the sentence stem below on the board and the ENTIRE conversation started to change in the room. Kids gained confidence in what they were saying because they knew exactly WHAT she was looking for in their conversations. Great job Mrs. Brooker!

STAAR TESTING
The fourth grade will be STAAR Testing on Tuesday, April 13. The restroom in the 4/5th grade wing will be reserved for 4th graders only. All classes should use the playground entrance near the third-grade classrooms. Lunch will follow the normal schedule.
Student Dress Code
Teachers, please help us remind students to follow the standardized dress code. Shirts should have a collar and can be red, white, or blue. Pants, shorts, or skirts should be khaki, blue, or black. No Jeans.
On Mondays we celebrate college awareness. If students are wearing a college shirt, they can wear jeans.
Fridays are school spirit days. Students wearing a Park Crest shirt may wear jeans on Friday.
Jams from Jana
As we enter this “season”, don’t forget that you can glean some valuable data from Imagine Math, Imagine Language and Lit., and Prodigy.
Please reach out if you need support pulling reports. Also, as you develop your STAAR review plans, I am available to help with schedules, materials, etc.
Substance from Selena....
Looking again at spelling from when we discussed it in the faculty meeting a few weeks ago, here are some focus points, with places to start underlined. Here is a station activity you could include for practice using the words in meaningful sentences: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vmaGC2GC4jjE6ymq6UD_Wvsotyss3mNUBtOkU6xHCHU/copy.
In my class, we would compile these into class books and add them to our classroom library.
High-quality spelling instruction should include:
· Frequent, distributed practice – throughout the week, with a variety of brief exercises.
· Word lists that are organized around a spelling pattern.
· Tasks that require careful analysis of both speech and print.
· Looking at syllables, phoneme-grapheme correspondences, and morphemes.
· Explanation of syllable types and syllabification.
· Use of words in meaningful sentences (Cloze sentences, sentence dictation, authentic writing).
· Word sorting for pattern recognition.
· Proofreading practice to build students’ ability to self-monitor their own writing.
· Dictation practice.
