ART NEWS: Creatively Speaking!
We are being visited by Art Goes To School this month. This organization brings prints of artwork and some replicas of 3D art work to our art room. The students learn art history and art appreciation. It is like having a museum come to Chesterbrook Academy! They will be visiting us on April 13th and 14th so every class will get to participate.
This month in the art room most of the classes were working on
- Junior Kindergarten students will continue to learn art techniques and practice cutting and drawing to improve our small motor skills so necessary in the art room. We will also begin learning about printmaking and all the different things you can use to print with including our fingers.
- Kindergarten students will create abstract artwork out of paper scraps after they learn about the artist Matisse. They will be painting some spring themed plant paintings and doing a line drawing much like the drawing that Harold did in Harold and the purple crayon.
- First grade students will be learning about the artist Henri Matisse who did paper cut outs in the later part of his life when he was too ill to paint. With the use of assistants, he created art work out of cut paper. They will learn the difference between organic shapes and geometric shapes. Matisse worked in organic abstract shapes cut out of bring colored papers.
- Second Graders students will be finishing their tree wearing projects and they will be moving onto a n interdisciplinary project where they will use their national park to create a multimedia landscape of their park.
- Third grade students will be finishing their stitching project which will have at least 4 of the different embroidery stitches to create their burlap tapestry. After their stitching project they will move onto a drawing project and learn about the artist Rousseau who did jungle paintings without ever having left Paris. A little research and some imagination will result in original jungle drawings.
- Fourth Grade will be moving into Op Art which is optical illusion art after we finish our weaving project. The unit on Op Art combines the science of vision and perception with math skills such as measuring and using tools such as ruler triangle and compass to create art work that feels like it moves. The artist that fourth grade will concentrate on is Bridget Riley who worked and lived in Philadelphia PA.
- Fifth grade will be moving into Op Art which is optical illusion art after we finish our weaving project. The unit on Op Art combines the science of vision and perception with math skills such as measuring and using tools such as ruler triangle and compass to create art work that feels like it moves. The artist that fifth grade will be concentrating on is Victor Vasarely. He was the master of Op Art and worked by hand to create images which would be done on the computer now in 2016.
