A Message from the Administration
Nearing the End of the Year
by John Terko, ABS Principal
Is it really almost June and the end of the school year? It feels that school years go faster and faster every year. Next year's school calendar has been adopted, and you can find that on our web site, stop in any school for a copy, or click on the previous link.
Many of our teams are getting ready for their end of the year trips and celebrations in the coming weeks. This is also a good time to check into the Williston Rec offerings. We have day camp here at ABS, soccer camp, lacrosse camp and much more.
I would like to thank all the parent volunteers for their work with 4 Winds. They make this natural science program a success each and every year.
As we get close to the end of this school year, stress always creeps in. Here are some tips from our counselor:
End of the school year stress can really pile up for kids, parents and teachers. Being aware and acknowledging the increase of stress at this time of year can be your first step towards getting through. Here are some other ideas to help you make it through with flying colors. Taking one day at a time really can be your best approach. Make sure to have all activities on the family calendar where all family members can see what’s coming up in the week ahead. If you are a “Family Meeting” type of family, bring that meeting back for these last three weeks of school. It will help you to communicate what is on the schedule, plan meals and work as a team. Make time for family fun. A few minutes spent together with a few laughs, ice cream or a quick family kick-ball game can change your perspective on getting through. And finally, enjoy the celebrations! The end of the school year provides many opportunities to reflect upon and celebrate your child’s successes. Carolyn Tatlock, ABS School Counselor
I will end here with a few upcoming dates that you may want to mark on your calendars. Check with your child’s team for end of the year activities. Also see the list of upcoming events at the end of this newsletter, and on our school website.

Allen Brook School Library Notes
From the WCS Library ….
Please remind your children to return all of their Williston Central School library books this week, but definitely by Friday, May 29th. If any are still at your house, we would really appreciate your sending them to school with your child.
Students need to pay for any titles that are truly lost, but the money will be cheerfully refunded if and when the missing books are found.
Thank you very much for your help.
ABS Art Show Thanks
I want to extend my sincere thanks to our Allen Brook community for helping to make our Art Show a success again this year; the artists who made and chose the work, the families who donated refreshments and joined in our celebration, the custodians who made our space clean and bright, Part 2 for helping to set up the cafeteria, the teachers who walked the halls with their students making sure that all was displayed correctly, and as always Bonnie Sicard who works so diligently on mounting, labeling and displaying the work. Thanks also to our amazing kitchen staff for the many delicious foods and lemonade! It has been another rewarding year in our Art Studio.
With appreciation from your very lucky Art Teacher,
Sara Beeken

Sterling Math Project Open House
This school year, 5th and 6th grade students in Sterling House at Williston Central School have been working on self-designed independent projects as part of our curriculum. The guiding question they have been asked to work towards answering is, “What can you do to change your world, and how can math help?” This has required students to think critically about how math can be applied in the real world, and track the mathematical habits they use to solve problems. Students developed their projects from brainstorm, to timeline, to implementation, to reflection. Please join us on Thursday, May 28th from 5:30-7pm to help us celebrate all that these students were able to accomplish. We will kick the evening off in the auditorium from 5:30 to 5:45, and then head down to the Sterling House classrooms to see the presentations students have created. We are looking forward to seeing you. Please contact Jared Bailey with questions, jbailey@cssu.org or 802-233-5639.

Cafeteria Accounts
Information for graduating 8th graders..
There will be no charging at all for 8th graders for the remainder of the year. If your 8th grader has a negative balance please pay it off right away and plan ahead for future purchases. Your students may either prepay for purchases, bring cash,
or bring food from home. All positive balances will be automatically transferred to CVU. You must maintain a positive balance at all times to make any purchases from CVU.
The SmartPay feature of mylunchmoney.com will be temporarily disabled as of 6/1/2015 to prevent inadvertently overfilling a student’s account with only a few days remaining. You may still make payments manually on mylunchmoney.com up until 6/19/2015.
If your graduating 8th grader is not going to CVU, please let us know as soon as possible. In that case, we will attempt to transfer any positive account balance to a younger sibling in our district. If that is not possible, we will automatically refund any balance $10 or greater. If your student’s balance is less than $10 you may request a refund in writing or by email to Scott Wagner. Any unrequested balances will be transferred into the WCS Sunshine Fund on 6/19/2015.
Thanks very much for your attention to this important end of the year information. Have a great summer and congratulations! Scott Wagner

Vermont’s immunization regulation requires parents to provide documentation of one dose of Tdap vaccine and two doses of Varicella before 7th grade entry. If your child receives vaccinations over the summer please send an updated immunization record to the Health Office. If a student doesn't meet the vaccine requirements, or have a current exemption on file, they may by temporarily admitted only after approval of the school nurse or administrator. MATURATION FILM FOR ALL 4TH GRADE STUDENTS DURING THE MONTH OF MAY
Students in the 4th grade will study an important lesson on the early stages of puberty. Many students in 4th grade are beginning to show early signs of puberty.
The Always Changing Program helps boys and girls:
* Understand the physical and emotional changes they experience during puberty, and
acknowledge these changes as a normal part of growth and development.
* Learn the physiology of their bodies and correct terminology for parts of the reproductive system.
* Understand that personal hygiene is each individual’s responsibility.
In Addition, the program helps girls:
* Understand the menstrual cycle.
* Understand what to expect during a period.
* Learn how to manage periods while continuing with normal activities.
If you have any questions, please contact the Health Office at 871-6170.
**If you do not wish to have your child participate in this lesson and/or view the maturation video, please inform your child’s teacher or school nurse.

Health Department Warns Tick Season Already Underway
“Ticks are abundant in all parts of the state. Using bug spray and doing daily tick checks should be part of every Vermonter’s routine,” said Erica Berl, an infectious disease epidemiologist for the Vermont Department of Health. “The earlier you remove a tick, the less likely you are to become sick.”
ttp://healthvermont.gov/prevent/zoonotic/tickborne/resources.aspx#schools
Lyme disease, one of the more common tickborne diseases in Vermont, is transmitted from the bite of infected deer ticks. Symptoms include an expanding red skin rash, swollen joints and flu-like symptoms.
Lyme disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics, especially if treatment is given early. Left untreated, Lyme disease may affect other parts of the body, including the heart and nervous system. If you believe you may have been infected or have developed a rash or fever, call your health care provider as soon as possible.

Dorothy Alling Memorial Library Programs for Kids
Reminder to Parents of Students who visit the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library:
This time of year brings challenges as students get excited about warm weather and the end of the school year. While we welcome your children at the library, we ask you to remind them that the library is a place for quiet reading and socializing. Students whose behavior does not meet the library’s guidelines will be asked to leave. If students repeatedly fail to meet these guidelines, they will be asked to leave for an extended period. Children must be age 9 or older to visit the library unattended. Library staff are not responsible for students at any time during their visits to the library.
Please help the library maintain a welcoming environment for all!
