Director of Schools - Parent Issue - March 2023

Director's Corner -

The second half of the year is flying by and we are now moving toward the spring season.

Just a quick reminder, Parent Teacher Conferences are March 14th. Parents, please be sure that you communicate with your child's teacher. Research shows that when parents/guardians are involved in the lives of their kids, their success rate is much higher. We appreciate the opportunity to work with your kid(s). If your child's teacher does not reach out to you, please reach out to them. We have excellent teachers that are happy to help in any way they can.

I would like to send out a

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS

to our teachers and staff members of the year!

This is a very prestigious award and we are so proud of our staff. This job is a calling and the following people have been instrumental in the lives of the faculty and students of Oneida.

OES - Valerie Hoffman and Stuart Manning

OMS - Heather Lowe and Renee Ryon

OHS - Melissa Cruz and April Jones

Coaches - Marv West & Jacob King

Staff -Julie Douglas

Administrator - Ashley Billingsley

Congratulations!

Reminder: We would also like input from our community on staff members that you see who are going above and beyond to support our students and community. You can nominate a staff member for the "People's Choice Award" by emailing their name and an explanation as to why you think this employee deserves the People's Choice Award to katie.johnson@oneidaschools.org.

One employee will be chosen each month!

It is that time of year again and Pre-K/Kindergarten registration is right around the corner. If you know a child who will be 3 or 4 years-old for Pre-K and 5 or 6 years-old for Kindergarten by August 15th, 2023, please encourage them to register at Oneida Elementary School. Students that receive exposure to our Pre-K and Kindergarten curriculum tend to be our high fliers as they progress throughout our system.

PRE-K Registration: March 7th (9:00am - 2:00pm)

KINDERGARTEN Registration: Opens March 6th

(Further details below)

As always, 'Thank You' for your support & partnership,

OSSD Core Standards

Our standards have been an intricate part of what we stand for as a district.

What are our standards as parents & guardians?

  1. We treat everyone with respect. Remember, you never know what someone is going through or how hard their job is until you walk in their shoes.
  2. We present our best selves to others.
  3. We are TEAM players - it takes parents, schools, and the community working together to ensure success for each of our students.
  4. We take PRIDE in ourselves and build positive relationships with the Oneida School staff.
  5. Your child's education is vital for their success. Focus on the positive things in the schools and work with the school staff on potential solutions for any issues that may arise.

"It is easier to put slippers on than it is to carpet the world."

District Highlights!

The month of February was a great one to be a fan of Oneida Indians athletics! Our middle school basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end with nice runs in the postseason while the high school teams are off to a hot start in postseason play.

The OMS Lady Indians were successful in winning their first-round contest of the TMSAA Section 2-A Tournament against Soldiers Memorial, but would fall in the following round to Englewood to end their season. The Lady Indians finished their year with an overall record of 15-10.

The OMS Indians also won their first-round contest of the TMSAA Section 2-A Tournament against Springdale. Unfortunately, the Indians would fall in the next round to Riceville to bring their season to an end. The Indians finished their season with an overall record of 15-10. Congrats to both those teams.

The OHS Lady Indians have had an amazing month on the court. Currently riding a six-game winning streak, the Lady Indians have not dropped a game in the month of February including two dominating performances in route to their fourth-straight District Tournament Championship. Raylie Bush, Braelyn Russ, and Rachel Elmore were named to the All-Tournament Team with senior Kelsey Pike earning the District 3-A Tournament MVP award. Oneida is currently 23-6 overall this season and finished a perfect 8-0 in district action. They begin their Region 2-A Tournament on Friday, February 24th with a home contest against Greenback at 7 pm. If successful, the rest of the Region Tournament will be held at Wartburg.

Similarly, the OHS boys’ team is also riding a six-game winning streak in the month of February. They also finished the regular season an undefeated 8-0 in district action and currently are 19-10 overall on the year. They also had a pair of outstanding performances en route to their first District 3-A Tournament Championship since 2020. Zeb Spradlin, Gavin Keeton, and Hayden Brawner were named to the All-Tournament Team with junior Mason Keeton earning the District 3-A Tournament MVP award. They begin their Region 2-A Tournament on Saturday, February 25th with a home contest against Rockwood at 7 pm. If successful, the rest of the Region Tournament will be held at Wartburg.

Early in February, select members of the Oneida High School Pride of the Tribe Marching Band performed ETSBOA All-State East concerts. Over 2,000 student musicians auditioned for a spot in one of these prestigious bands and three Indians were chosen to be part of this special event. Congratulations to Philip Thompson, Steven Lawson, and Gabe Botts for their hard work and dedication to their craft. On Saturday, February 25th, the OHS Pride of the Tribe Marching Bank will compete at an Indoor Competition at Claiborne High School in New Tazewell, TN. Good luck to our program!

Spring seasons are just around the corner as most of our teams will get started by the second week of March. Schedules and roster for all of our spring sports will soon be listed on the official athletics site of the Oneida Indians at

www.oneidaindianstn.com.
