Progress Monitoring

Why is progress monitoring necessary?
Instruction should always match what the child needs to grow and improve. When benchmarks are completed, teachers can identify the areas of strengths and weaknesses for a child. Instruction that follows should match those strengths and weaknesses. For struggling students, this would involve the identification of the lowest area of need so that instruction can be customized specifically for this skill area. After several weeks of intensive instruction in that area, teachers need to find out if their instruction is working for that child and progress monitor on that skill level. In other words, all third grade students who fall in the intensive needs area (red) in DIBELS would not necessarily need to be progress monitored in DORF or DAZE. There will be children who have deficits below those skill levels who will need instruction and progressmonitoring at lower levels. A continuum of skills and subskills is attached. This continuum breaks the “Big 5” areas down into subskills that a child may need as a foundation to develop the larger skill area. Progress monitoring lets teachers know if their instruction on specific targeted skills is working and if students are moving. If there is no movement, then instructional strategies and practices need to be changed. Using the Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework, progress monitoring is essential in determining the effectiveness of core instruction. Progress monitoring is used to monitor how a student (or group of students) is responding to the instruction being delivered. Utilizing progress monitoring as part of a problem-solving cycle will assist with determining the effectiveness of instruction at any layer of instructional support.
