SOARING INTO KINDERGARTEN!
The purpose of this newsletter is to provide you with the essential information that you need before we get the school year rolling. We recommend taking a quick look at the information and then tuck this newsletter away in a safe spot so that you can come back to it as we get closer to the start of the school year. There is a lot of information in this newsletter. I repeat. There is a lot of information in this newsletter. We tried to prioritize the information in way that has the most critical information you need now at the top and then other important information that you might not need until the school year gets started. Again, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. We are here to help and make the transition as smooth as possible.

Infinite Campus (IC)
Lunch Experience
Kindergarteners have lunch at school. The lunchroom is a very exciting and new place for our kindergarten friends! They really enjoy the social piece of the lunchroom and the opportunity to meet and chat with new friends. In the beginning this can sometimes be a little bit of a challenge for kindergarteners because they get so caught up in the fun that they forget to eat! The adults supervising will continue to encourage students to eat but do not be surprised in the beginning of you child is coming home with food that you pack.
We HIGHLY encourage you to pack a cold lunch the first couple of weeks of school. This allows your child to get into the groove of the lunchroom and the expectations of the lunchroom. Again, it is always a favorite of kindergarten students and it can be overwhelming. After the first two weeks then we begin to focus on the hot lunch process. This requires students to get in line, order, and punch in a code. This can take a little time in the beginning so we like to have a bit of time to get them use to the lunchroom and then add the hot lunch process. We also understand that we will have students who take hot lunch right away. This is not a problem and we will make it work! We have just found it to be an easier way to transition at the start of the year.
Hot lunch is $2.20 per day which includes milk. Lunch payment can be made by check sent to school with your child or paid electronically through your parent portal in Infinite Campus. Children may also bring a lunch from home. Milk is available at lunch for $.40. Children use their student ID# to log into pay for lunch. You can find this number in your Waukesha School District Infinite Campus parent portal. You would have set up an account with user name and password when you registered your child for kindergarten. You will receive a sample key pad at "Popsicles on the Playground" or at Open House for children to practice and get familiar with the key pad they will be using at school. Teachers and lunch aides help kindergarten children with this during the kindergarten lunch hour.
Transportation
In past years, a post card from First Student Bus Company (262-524-0667) was sent to each student’s home the week before school starts with bussing information; however, this year post cards will not be sent. In order to access your child's bus route information you need to login to your Waukesha School District Infinite Campus parent portal account. You would have set up a user name and password when you registered your children for Kindergarten.
BUS ROUTE INFORMATION WILL BE AVAILABLE IN YOUR PARENT PORTAL ON:
AUGUST 23, 2019.
There is a form available on the Rose Glen website (link: Transportation to Alternate Location Request Form) if you need to change your child’s bus due to child care. This is needed even if your child will be attending the Lawrence Center for before or after school care. Please complete the form and send it in as soon as possible because at the beginning of the school year, changes can take up to 14 days to take effect due to the large volume of scheduling. If you can submit it prior to school starting there is a much better chance that your child’s schedule will be set by the time school starts.
Before and After School Care
Cool School Program Link:
Before and After School Specifics for Kindergarten
Beginning of the Day - Bus: We highly encourage your Kindergartener to take the bus the first day of school. This allows them to get into a groove right away and know what to expect moving forward. You can feel free to follow the bus to school and get that first day of school picture. You will most likely get to school before the bus arrives and this will create a wonderful opportunity for first day of school pictures. We will have multiple adults helping to assist your child and we will make sure that they get to the right spot as they exit off the bus. At Popsicles on the Playground and/or Open House we will provide a label for your child to wear those first couple of days so that we can easily identify where they are suppose to go.
End of the Day - Bus: At the beginning of the year we spend a lot of time with our kindergarten friends getting them ready to board the bus at the end of the day. We also use 4th and 5th grade helpers to load students on the right bus. Your child will become familiar with their bus helper and your child's bus helper will make sure that they get on the right bus and be on the lookout for your child. We intentionally load the kindergarten students first so that we can make sure that students are all on the right bus and ready to go at the end of the day. Eventually they become more independent and know their helper and their bus.
Drop-Off: See below specific information related to drop-off for those who will not be taking the bus. For those who are not in 4K or do not utilize the bus we have Walkers' Circle on the side of the building. Supervision is provided daily on the playground starting at 8:20 AM. Please do not drop your child off before this as there is no supervision available. If you would like to walk your child up the hill then please park on the road and not within the circle. We understand at the beginning you may want to ensure that they get up the hill. It is quite a big hill for our littlest learners!
Pick-Up: See below specific information related to pick-up for those who will not be taking the bus. Please know that we have an adult who specifically walks kindergarten students down the hill at the end of the day to meet the individual that is picking them up at the end of the day. We try to walk the kindergarten students down first at the beginning of the year so that they get use to the process. We have noticed that many kindergarten families will come a little earlier and park on the road and meet their student on the grassy area along the hill in the beginning. This is ok as we want you to feel comfortable with the process. Please do not park in the circle and wait for your child in the grassy area. This will cause a lot of honking of horns and hold-ups in the circle. There will be at least two adults down there and a child is never left down at the hill. If you are running late we will simply walk your child back up the hill and they can wait at the office until your arrival. There will always be supervision. It will probably be a little confusing at first. It will get easier and your will get in a groove quickly as the year continues!
Park and Recreation "Cool School" Before and After School Care:
At the beginning of the day Park and Recreation will make sure that your child gets to their classroom. At the end of the day the kindergarten teachers will make sure that they get to Park and Recreation. The meeting spot is in the school gym.
Changes in Pick-Up: At Popsicles on the Playground and/or Open House your child's kindergarten teacher will solicit information as to what the plan is for dismissal. A consistent schedule is beneficial for all. Please remember that your child's teacher is responsible for ensuring that approximately 25 students go to the right place at the end of the day. We also know that life happens and an occasional change might need to take place. Please notify your child's teacher with as much advance notice as possible if there does need to be a change. Additionally, please call the office prior to 3:00 to notify us of these changes. Especially if the change is made the day of then make sure to notify the office. A teacher may not get to their voicemail or email prior to the end of the day and we want to make sure that your child gets where they need to go at the end of the day. We request that you contact us prior to 3:00 if possible because the office becomes a very busy place at the end of the day!
Drop-Off Procedures
Rose Glen is a relatively large elementary school. Each year we typically have 10 busses bringing our students to and from school each day. Unfortunately, we have a relatively small parking lot to handle the before and after school traffic that is present daily. Therefore, it is critical that we all work together to follow the established procedures for pick-up and drop-off. When we all follow the established the procedures everything flows really well and safety is maintained! Most students at Rose Glen take the bus to and from school each day. If your child is being dropped off and picked up each day then below we have the following procedures. Also know that our procedures will always be available to you in our weekly Smore Newsletter.
GOALS:
To ensure that we are creating the safest environment and procedures possible for morning drop-off.
To ensure that all Rose Glen community members are aware of the current drop-off procedures.
CIDER HILLS CROSSING:
A crosswalk has been added to provide a safe pathway for families from Rose Glen to the Cider Hills neighborhood. Additionally, STOP signs have also been added to slow cars down and to ensure that families are able to cross without having to worry about on-coming traffic. These STOP signs will be activated from 8:15-8:40 and 3:30-3:50.
General Drop-Off Procedures:
All cars should enter through the ENTRANCE ONLY to drop children off.
There is NO PARKING IN WALKERS’ CIRCLE. It is intended for fluid drop-off of children. Walkers' Circle is the horseshoe shaped entrance and exit located on the side of the building. Please exit quickly and cautiously. Be mindful that others are waiting to drop-off and unnecessary stopping causes delays and interferes with the purpose of Walkers Circle.
Cars can exit and turn left from the left lane or turn right from the right lane. NO U-Turns, no Y-Turn, no backing up and out through the entrance, or using the neighborhood cul-de-sac. Traffic either goes right or left out of the circle.
Children should use the sidewalk of Walkers’ Circle to walk to the hill. No children should be seen leaving the car from the driver’s side of the car. All children exiting the car should leave from the passenger side of the car.
Cars only use the right side of the Walkers’ Circle.
- No cars should use the left lane of Walkers’ Circle to park or drop-off children. This lane will be open so that cars can safely pull into the left side for left turn exiting purposes.
- If you want to walk your child up the hill in the morning please do not park in the circle. Please pull up and park on the road. This will allow Walkers' Circle to keep moving.
- No parking on Brookhill Drive that runs parallel to Walkers’ Circle (the grassy part of the Walkers’ Circle). This will allow cars turning both left and right to have a clear view of oncoming traffic. Cars that park next to grass area closest to the Walkers’ Circle create a blindspot. Therefore, moving forward we would like to reduce this risk and make this a No Parking Zone.
Pick-Up Procedures
GOALS:
To ensure that we are creating the safest environment and procedures possible for afternoon pick-up.
To ensure that all Rose Glen community members are aware of the current pick-up procedures.
CIDER HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD CROSSING!
If you live in the Cider Hills neighborhood a teacher or staff member will escort your child and cross them to the neighborhood. Please contact us if your child will be utilizing the Cider Hills crosswalk prior to school starting. This will allow us to connect with them prior to the end of the day and ensure that we have all the students that we will be walking across to the neighborhood. This will ensure that they know the plan and are comfortable with the end of the day procedures.
General Pick-Up Procedures:
All cars should enter through the ENTRANCE ONLY to pick children up.
There is NO PARKING IN WALKERS’ CIRCLE. It is intended for fluid pick-up of children. Please exit quickly and cautiously. Be mindful that others are waiting to pick-up and unnecessary stopping causes delays and interferes with the purpose of Walkers Circle.
Cars can exit and turn left from the left lane or turn right from the right lane. NO U-Turns, no Y-Turn, no backing up and out through the entrance, or using the neighborhood cul-de-sac. Traffic either goes right or left out of the circle.
Children should use the sidewalk of Walkers’ Circle to walk to enter the car. No children should be seen entering the car from the driver’s side of the car. All children entering the car should be seen entering from the passenger side of the car.
Do not park in the neighborhood cul-de-sac. There are already signs posted and we need to adhere to these posted signs out of respect for our neighbors.
Cars only use the right side of the Walkers’ Circle.
No cars should use the left lane of Walkers’ Circle to pick children up. This lane will be open so that cars can safely pull into the left side for left turn exiting purposes.
No parking on Brookhill Drive that runs parallel to Walkers’ Circle (the grassy part of the Walkers’ Circle). This will allow cars turning both left and right to have a clear view of oncoming traffic. Cars that park next to grass area closest to the Walkers’ Circle create a blindspot. Therefore, moving forward we would like to reduce this risk and make this a No Parking Zone.
As you use Walkers Circle, it is important to be mindful of keeping the flow going. Drive forward as cars exit. With the left lane open for traffic, then cars should be able to navigate safely and easily out of the Circle. No student will be allowed to enter or cross the circle to get in a vehicle if the vehicle is parked in the left lane.
It is important that cars do not park at the entrance of the hill on Brookhill. This is critical to keeping flow into the circle moving. If a car cannot get into the Circle because another car has chose to park, then the whole flow of the Circle is stopped or slowed down. With the changes we should anticipate that there might be a longer line up Brookhill to get into the Walkers Circle. As kids are picked up in the Circle, then cars will be able to enter from Brookhill to also pick up.
Anticipate that it might take a few extra minutes. A lot of thought has been put into how we can create the safest pick-up possible. Remember that the ultimate goal is child safety. Patience is key during this time of day.
My School Anywhere Online Directory
Did you know that Rose Glen has an online family directory? Having access to this directory is a great way for you to stay connected with other school families. It also is the way that you would get contact information for your child’s classmates, including information you would need for sending out birthday invitations via email or U.S. mail. (Please know that unless your child is inviting the entire class, party invitations may not be distributed at school.)
Another important reason you may want to be included in the directory is to give your child the opportunity to be invited to birthday parties or other gatherings with classmates, since neither the teachers nor the office staff is able to share contact information with you. We are grateful to our PTO for supporting this online directory so that families can connect easily!
The My School Anywhere site is currently being updated for the new school year, so check back soon and you will be able to input your information.

How may I be involved at school?
Volunteers are always needed. Some volunteer opportunities include: making Xerox copies for teachers, and assisting in our school library. Also, many opportunities exist for getting involved with our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Information on PTO will be sent to you. Watch for information the school newsletter, at Open House and throughout the year.
What if I have other questions?
Just ask. We’re to help you and your child. Contact us whenever you have a question, suggestion, or concern. Communication with you is very important. Let us know how we can help.
Kindergarten Curriculum & Resources
Additionally, your child will go to Art, Music, and PE twice a week for 40 minutes. Each day they will have a 'special' and one day a week they will have two 'special' classes. Kindergarten students also go to recess two times a day for approximately 20 minutes. The only exception is when the kindergarten students have two specials in one day. Then they will only have one recess. Play is also critical to kindergarten and is built into the daily schedule as well. At Open House you will receive a copy of your child's schedule so you can become familiar with their day and what they are doing throughout the school day.
To support Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) we implement the Second Step Curriculum. Below is a link to the Second Step Program and what your child will be learning throughout the school year. We will also be developing a school goal around Second Step and Social-Emotional Learning so stay tuned for more information!

Volunteering at Rose Glen
Too Sick for School
Too Sick for School Guidelines
Deciding when to keep a sick child home from school can be a difficult decision. To help identify illnesses in our schools, parents/guardians are encouraged to report their child’s specific symptoms when calling in sick to the health room at their child’s school. Voice messages can be left for our health room assistants 24 hours a day on a confidential voicemail.
Fevers
A child with a temperature of 100.0 degrees F or higher should not be at school.
A child should be fever free without the use of fever-reducing medication (Tylenol/acetaminophen, Aleve/ibuprofen) for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child has other symptoms such as a rash, skin lesions, sore throat or coughing are present, notify your healthcare provider to discuss the need for medical follow up.
Common Respiratory Illnesses
(these can include Influenza, Pertussis, Common Cold, Croup)
Children with cold symptoms such as minor throat irritation & stuffy/runny nose without a fever should not have to miss school.
If a child has severe cold symptoms (hacking/harsh cough, a very runny nose and/or thick, colored nasal drainage) may need medical attention. Contact your health care provider to determine if your child needs to be seen for evaluation.
Sore Throat
A child with a very painful sore throat, white spots on the back of the throat, high fever, rash, stomach ache and/or headache should stay home from school and be seen by a health care provider to rule out a possible infection.
If diagnosed with strep throat the child must be on antibiotics for a minimum of 24 hours and be fever free without fever reducing medications before returning to school.
Hand, Foot and Mouth/Fifth Disease
A child with hand, foot, and mouth disease is most contagious during the first week of illness. Talk with your healthcare provider about when your child may return to school.
Ear Infection/Ear Pain
Children should stay home until fever free without the use of fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours. Please notify healthcare provider to discuss the need for medical follow up.
Vomiting, Diarrhea, Stomach Ache
(illnesses may include gastroenteritis, salmonella, rotavirus)
If your child has had more than one episode of diarrhea or vomiting, please keep your child out of school until symptoms have resolved for at least 24 hours. An exception may be made if diarrhea or vomiting are associated with an ongoing medical issue diagnosed by a physician.
Contact your health care provider if your child has a stomach ache that is severe enough to limit or restrict activity.
Rash
If your child has an unusual rash (may or may not be associated with a fever), keep your child at home until you have discussed the rash with your health care provider to determine if medical care is needed.
Pink Eye/Conjunctivitis
Symptoms can include crusty, sticky, itchy, red eyes which may or may not have thick drainage.
Please contact your child’s doctor if your child has any of the following symptoms: eye drainage that comes back every 30 minutes (or more often) after wiping the eye clear, if there is swelling and redness of the area around the eye (below or above), or an eye that is stuck together in the morning. If these symptoms are present, follow up with health care provider is needed prior to returning to school.
Impetigo/MRSA/Ringworm
These skin conditions can be contagious rashes in children and require treatment by a medical professional prior to returning to school.
These can look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage present.
Students should stay home for 24 hours and/or until area is not draining or can be covered safely.
Other skin conditions such as eczema, heat rashes, bug bites and allergic reactions are not infectious, and a child may come to school with them.
Other Contagious/Nuisance Diseases
If your child has been diagnosed with a nuisance infestation/disease such as head lice or scabies, he/she may return to school after treatment has been completed. Please contact your health care provider for instruction if you suspect your child needs treatment.
Additional Information:
Handwashing - This link to Center for Disease Control (CDC) has many helpful tips for preventing spread of disease(s) through handwashing: http://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/when-how-handwashing.html
Regular handwashing is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.
Medications: If your child needs to take medications in school, including prescription OR over the counter remedies such as Tylenol or cough drops, the School District requires the following information:
For Prescription Medications: An authorization form must be completed and signed by both a licensed health care provider and a parent and must be on file in the health room before medication can be given. The following is a link to the form: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1A0pK-6vYP7ydUaWOdtcfE0MVghZoOaocukjgIQ7g9ao4S6_DyN1hEKc3vIyVZ-kcOsPJo4cvmDx8U7ny/view
For Over-the-Counter Medications: An authorization form must be completed and signed by a parent and must be on file in the health room before medication can be given. Medications that have exceeded their expiration date cannot be administered. The following is a link to the form:
Medications must be delivered to the school by an adult and in the original manufacturer or pharmacy-labeled container.
