A Note from Mr. Bender

Dear Families,

It’s hard to believe that it’s time for Spring Break. As a reminder, GCPS is following CDC guidance regarding travel outside of the U.S. Please see the CDC document related to international travel in this week's Cub Corner for specifics. Thank you for helping to keep all of our students and staff safe!

Enjoy your break, remember to read, and we’ll see you on April 12th!

Have a wonderful break!

Mike Bender

Principal

Experience Online Testing Georgia: Grades 3-5

This practice site lets students experience Milestones testing online. Parents and educators are welcome to try it too. The items on the demonstration tests are general and are organized into three grade bands: Grades 3 – 5, Grades 6 – 8, and High School in the content areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The items do not necessarily represent the specific grade-level content that students learn daily in their classrooms. The primary purpose is to let students experience, firsthand, the functionality of the online testing platform. The sample tests are not graded, so have fun!

You are an important partner with your child’s teacher, whether your child is learning at home or at school. To help you support your child’s learning, GCPS is launching a new initiative called AKS at Home. With this project, families will learn ways to help their child practice skills they are learning in class as part of the district’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Parents have access to a library of recorded sessions and tip-sheets. Find more information on the AKS at Home web page.

Character Word of the Month: Fairness

Big picture

The character trait for the month of April is Fairness. We define fairness as treating others in a way that is right or reasonable. Fairness also means that each of us gets what we need. We can show fairness by playing by the rules, taking turns and sharing, and taking personal responsibility for our actions. Teachers will choose one student in their class that exhibited fairness the most for the month of April to represent their class as the Cub of the Month.

Mindfulness Activity

Big picture
The mindfulness activity for the month of April is Butterfly Body Scan. The Butterfly Body Scan helps to relax our body and mind. By imagining a butterfly hovering over our body, we move our attention from one part of our body to another to release tension.

Reading Rewards

Reading Rewards logs for the month of April were sent home in today’s Friday folders! I hope you will read and log your minutes over spring break! We look forward to recognizing our March readers during the month of April.

The goal of our Reading Rewards program is to help students develop a consistent habit of reading. The monthly requirement is to read, outside of school hours, at least 20 minutes a day for at least 20 days of the month. Students are expected to list book titles and minutes read on each of the 20 dates that are logged on the form. Parents must initial each of the entry dates.

For students to be recognized, the reading log must be turned in on time and considered complete. Students can complete and submit a paper or digital log. The digital log can be found on the school home page of eCLASS. The digital log is an editable pdf file that can be downloaded and saved to your computer at home. Once complete the digital log is submitted as an eCLASS assignment.

Reading logs can be turned into your teacher anytime you have finished the requirements. No logs should be received before the 21st of each month.

If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, please email Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
