School Guidance Program

Over the course of the following week, I will be conducting a needs assessment to help guide the school counseling program. The data collected will be used to determine the topics in upcoming guidance lessons, small group interventions, and other supportive programs. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Your honest responses to all questions will be most helpful to us as we review and evaluate the effectiveness of the Guidance and Counseling Program at South Shades Crest Elementary. All responses will be kept confidential and used to improve our program.

Go Gold Day, Give Hope:

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we plan to show our support here at SSC on September 20th! Were you aware that:

-1 in 300 children will be diagnosed with cancer by age 21.

-More than 150 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Alabama.

-Over 500 children undergo cancer treatments each year in Alabama.

-80% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured of their illness, compared to less than 50% just two decades ago.

-Only 4% of federal funding for cancer research is directed towards childhood cancer as a whole.

Childhood cancer is a grossly underfunded and overlooked disease, even though it is the leading cause of disease-related death in children and adolescents. Give Hope Day on September 20th gives administrators, staff, teachers, parents, and children the chance to recognize and honor those who have battled childhood cancer as well as raise awareness. Have your child wear yellow/gold on this day to show support for childhood cancer! Because awareness leads to funding and funding leads to cures! #givehope (You can also visit for more information)

PTO Fundraising 2019-2020

What are our fundraisers? Our major fundraisers include our annual fall Change for Change drive and our spring Fairy Tale Festival. Throughout the year we will also have school spirit nights, everyday fundraisers, PTO dues and donations, and offer spirit wear. This handout will give you a look ahead at what to expect during the school year and let you know how much money we hope to raise at each event.

Change for Change October 7th – 11th Our annual Change for Change fall fundraiser is a coin drive that kicks off October 7th. This week students will bring in coins, bills and checks. Mondays: Pennies. Tuesday: Nickels. Wednesday: Dimes. Thursday: Quarters. Friday: Any coins, bills and checks. This is a very successful fundraiser for SSC. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for our school.

Fairy Tale Festival Friday, February 28th, 2020 Last year we introduced a new fundraiser that was a huge success! We hope you’ll join us for dancing, stories, activities, character photos, dessert and much more! Dress up as your favorite fairy tale character if you wish. Our Fairy Tale Festival is a community-wide event so bring a neighbor or a friend. Tickets are needed for children 2 and up, and they are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. All activities are included in the ticket price and Chick-fil-A will be available for purchase with 10% of sales donated to SSC! The Fairy Tale Festival will also kick off our silent auction fundraiser. The goal of this event, including the auction, is to raise $9,000 for our school.

Spirit Nights There will be four spirit nights held throughout the year - two in the fall and two in the spring. The goal for our Spirit Nights is to raise $1,000 total ($250 per event) for our school. Our first spirit night kicks off the new school year. Come join us after meet the teacher at Let’s Play located near Target at the Grove. Mention SSC and we will receive a portion of all money earned. Kids and parents must wear socks and sign a waiver. Please note the Kindergarten parent meeting begins at 5:30 at SSC. *This was a great fundraiser for our school last year!
