NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
November 15, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Since I moved to Nederland in July of 2017, I have always been so impressed by how supportive this amazing community is. Though as mountain residents we are fiercely independent and resilient, we also come together when someone is in need. I have seen this strong and supportive community in action over the last week. Since we have learned of the tragic car accident that took the life of Sheila’s, our registrar, son last weekend there has been a tremendous outpouring of support. Thank you to all of you who have expressed your sympathy to Sheila and her family, to those of you who have offered to assist at school, and to those who keep asking what they can do to help. Here are links to information and other ways you can support Sheila and her family:

When reflecting about community, I also want to acknowledge and celebrate Jessica Fitzer. Jessica has served on our PTA for years and most recently has acted as our president for the last two and a half years. Her contribution to our school and community has been extraordinary. She has organized countless community and fundraising events that have shaped the positive culture and climate at Nederland Elementary and supported the learning of untold numbers of students. Thank you, Jessica, for all you have done for our school.
Lastly, I wanted to share some good news. I’m thrilled to announce that my husband and I are expecting our first child on April 30th. I’m also pleased to share that Karen Daly, my mentor and veteran BVSD principal, will be filling in for me the last three weeks of school while I’m on maternity leave.
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

A little about me:
I grew up in the south and moved to Europe at the age of 20. I flew back and forth over the big Atlantic puddle for a decade, mostly seasonally. I spent part of every year leading hiking tours in the Alps, and traveling and exploring different countries when I wasn’t “working.” In 2001, I moved to Arizona to finish a degree in Ecology at Prescott College. After moving to Colorado a few years later, I earned a degree in Elementary Education at CU Boulder and my Montessori Certification at MECR in Boulder. I have spent the last 16 years working with children and their families in various capacities. Preschool is my favorite developmental period (don’t tell my kids), so I’m especially excited and honored to hang with the kiddos in the preschool program here at Nederland Elementary School.
A little about my family:
My husband, Stephen and I have two school-aged children, one dog, six chickens and two dwarf hamsters (in order of importance). I grew up with five siblings. My siblings currently live in Florida, Texas, Arizona and Colorado.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES (Nov 11 -15, 2019)
Life is full of stressors. How we think about and deal with stress can determine whether it harms our bodies or not. Instead of thinking that you are failing if you feel stressed out, think of the sensations in your body as just a signal to kick start your healthy responses to stress. And try to see your anxiety as a gift -- people who experience lots of anxiety have been found to be more sensitive, caring and intelligent.
When we are anxious, our body is flooded with cortisol and adrenaline ~ hormones that give us additional energy to deal with events. But cortisol constricts our blood vessels and impacts our hearts unless we can slow our breathing and consciously open up the affected areas (jaw, chest, stomach). We need to harness the extra energy to work on our challenges or move it out of our bodies.
During our stress response, our bodies are also secreting oxytocin ~ a bonding agent that makes us reach out to others. It is a built-in mechanism within our stress response that helps motivate us to talk to others who can help us feel calm. Teach your child to intentionally relax constricted areas, use movement to release stress, view anxiety as a powerful energy, and talk to trusted adults and friends when overwhelmed.
