Roberts Middle School
Grit: Volume 32
Dear Roberts,
I came across a quote last week that put into words why I am so passionate about my calling as a teacher. Brian Houston said, “Live in a way that your ceiling becomes the next generation's floor." A ceiling represents a limitation but it also represents the height of an opportunity. On the other hand, a floor represents a foundation. Everything we do as teachers is to setup our students for success. Success is setting up a platform for the next generation to have the skills necessary in a ever-changing world. How do we create an environment that inspires students to do better than the status quo or better yet, than ourselves? I believe that teachers are the number one game changers for the trajectory of our students, outside of their own parents. This means you and your stories and testimonies of perseverance matter to students. Marshall Ganz, who is a professor at Harvard said, “You may think that your story doesn’t matter, that people aren’t interested, that you shouldn’t be talking about yourself. But when you do public work, you have a responsibility to offer a public account of who you are, why you do what you do, and where you hope to lead.” I believe you will lead your students to the promise land of growth by your actions and spoken words of affirmation. I believe you will lead them to become contributing members of society by modeling the way.
This is a school that speaks life into those students who came with labels. This can only be done by selfless compassion, purposeful collaboration, deliberate planning, and using the right instructional strategies that have the highest payoff. By doing this our students will reach ceilings you have yet to imagine.
I want to thank you for your hard work. I have been in and out of classes and I cannot say enough to show my appreciation. You make me so proud to be your principal. You are doing work that matters. Thank you for loving kids more than they deserve. You can wear Houston Rockets shirts with jeans on the days they play this week.
