If a student has forgotten their ID Badge, the consequence is last in line at lunch and no Snack Bar.

Science
Hello Thunderhawks!
This week in science, students began our unit on Weather. Students learned about air masses and fronts and how to read a weather map.
Want to engage your student? Try watching the news weather forecast with them and have a discussion about what is going on!
We will continue our unit on weather for two more weeks. After Thanksgiving break, we will work on a related unit - severe weather
English
Hello Thunderhawks!
This week, we are continuing our grammar workshop. We are practicing our recognition of sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and complete sentences. As we work through being able to recognize the difference, we will progress into writing and correcting run-on sentences and fragments. Next week we will use a poem by Maya Angelou to continue our work with grammar, and also circle back around to adjectives and adverbs

Literacy
We are just getting started in our whole class novel, The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Bruebraker Bradley. Students are reading approximately two chapters per day and adding vocabulary words to their packet. They will take a vocabulary quiz each Friday. This novel is very long, so it will keep us going until Winter Break.

6th Grade Math
This week we started Unit 4. We started the unit learning all about Unit Rates. We also started our flipped classroom model. We have many students who did a great job completing their homework notes at home like they were assigned. We do still have many coming to school without having homework completed. Please check in with your student to make sure they are completing the 2 or 3 homework assignments that we give per week. Homework notes generally take less than 15 minutes and is something they can do independently.
Need Help in Math? Here’s what you can do:
Come see your math teacher during pre-advisory (7:10-7:40)
Come do a working lunch. (There is always 1 math teacher available during that time to offer help).
6th Grade IA Pre-Algebra
This week we finished Unit 3 with a test on Friday. Next week we will begin Unit 4 on Proportional Relationships. We will apply proportions, ratios, and scale factors to solve problems involving scale drawings and determine side lengths and areas of similar triangles and rectangles.

Geography
Hey ThunderHawk families! This past Friday we had our Chapter 3 Geography tests. If students are unhappy with their score, please have them fill out a “Request to Redo” form. This is found in their “Student Course Resources” module in Canvas. This upcoming week in Geography, students will start studying how to read and write about historical documents. All week long we will participate in what we call “DBQs”, or “Document Based Questions”. At the end of the week, Heartland is going to celebrate Veterans’ Day with a school assembly. If you have family members who have served our country in any capacity, you are welcome to email us a picture of them. This picture will be shown at the assembly to honor your family’s service to the United States!

Message for 6th Grade Principal
Hello Thunderhawk Family!
Reminder, there is no school on Nov. 7th I am sure students are looking forward to their short week.. Teachers will be in the building on Nov. 7th working hard at developing engaging lesson plans and collaborating with other professionals in education.
As we approach Thanksgiving Break, this is a great time to check-in and make sure you’re up-to-date on your assignments and to really focus on your grades because the end of the semester will come fast.
As always…a quick reminder to students to find that trusted adult in the building that they can talk to. Middle school can be challenging and we are starting to experience some of those challenges that come from being at a bigger school with more kids, as well as seven classes and a much larger work load. Your teachers and myself are here to help you navigate through that. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help or talk to us!
Santa Fe High School is starting a Strength and Conditioning Clinic that will be open to 6th graders. If this is something you may be interested in, see Coach Wilkerson in the gym to get a flyer!
November’s word of the month is attentiveness. So, as said by Kevin Eikenberry, “Be attentive to your thoughts, because they predict your future.”

Fall tips:
Simplify your life, slow down for self-care this fall.
Go outside! Get some fresh air and go for a walk,
Breathe and Breathe again! Breathe in for four seconds, hold your breath for four , breathe out for five seconds can signal to your body that you are in control and choosing to calm down. You can also download an app, such as “Pause” for meditation and there is a “Calm” app for breathing techniques.
You are now in the 2nd 9 weeks; be sure to keep up with your school work. Ask questions if you don’t understand a question.
