Vose News
Parent & Family Newsletter- June 2020
Principal Message:
Greetings to our families and parents...
It is with a heavy heart that I write this portion of our message to you. Mrs. Holz and I felt the need to add to what our original message had been, which you can see below, as a result of recent tragic events in our nation. The tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has once again highlighted the undeniable injustice and inequities in our systems and societies in the United States. We know that within our diverse Vose community there are many of you that are directly or indirectly impacted by racism and oppression. We want you to know we see you, we want to support you and we want to help our society do better. We know there are also others who are confused and unsure of what to think, what to do right now. We want you to know we are here to support you as well.
We feel it is a moral imperative as educators and mothers to raise awareness, provide support and space for all to share their stories and emotions. The issues of race, racism, classism and oppression are challenging and emotionally-charged topics. The conversations are difficult. But we are committed as educators at Vose to do what we can, one step at a time. We know with challenges come opportunities. We also want to share resources and ideas...here are a few for parents and adults in general. Feel free to use what speaks to you. if you have some you've come across, please be sure to share with me at monique_singleton@beaverton.k12,or.us.
- Check in with family and friends of color: Please consider reading this short article from Refinery 29 and use it as guidance as you check in with your peers and friends.

Now, onto the rest of our messages...
Spring in Oregon is beautiful, isn't it? The beautiful colors of spring from bright green leaves on trees waking up from winter naps to brilliantly hued flowers and snow-covered Mt. Hood against a blue sky. I love it. Spring weather in Oregon, though? Days can be warm and sunny or cold and rainy . . . sometimes both within just a few minutes.. I imagine that wild swing between two extremes may be similar to how many of us feel learning, teaching, and working from home. Students, I applaud you for doing your best and continuing to learn at home. Parents, guardians, and family members, thank you for stepping in to guide, teach, coach, encourage, and answer questions while you're in the midst of taking care of your family and many are working too. Spring has long been a time of hope for me.
This year I'm missing students, my colleagues and the routine of school as we once knew it. I often find myself reflecting and thinking about what once was, and what is to be in the future. But I remind myself I can only control what I can control. One thing I’ve decided to do is to record my daily reflections and accounts of how our life has shifted through a journal for myself and my kids to later reflect on in years to come. I always try to make sure I include at least one “silver lining” each day….something positive or hopeful that I am grateful right now. I hope you can find some silver linings in your days as well.
One of the silver linings is that we have more time together as a family. We have tried to create special memories, within the social distancing guidelines of course. Last weekend we were able to fish at Clear Lake near the McKenzie River. My oldest son caught the most fish, but I definitely kept busy baiting hooks and catching a few rainbow trout of my own...check out my first catch in the photo above. Lots of fun memories from the day.
As we look to the fall, we still are not sure what the guidance will be from the CDC and the governor, so we can't say specifically if we will have continued remote learning, be at school in the building or some sort of combination of the two. We will communicate with parents once a more clear plan is developed, most likely within the next month or so hopefully. Please know we will be looking for the best ways to balance health, safety and a quality education for your children. Once we know what the format will be, we will be able to share the potential School Supply List as well.
During our time apart from so many, as I glance out the window to take a quick computer-screen break, or work in the yard or even take a walk with my family and our two dogs, I'm grateful to enjoy spring unfolding before my eyes (the rain does bring rewards) and find hope and pride in the collective work of our school community ... including the families learning together at home. I hope that you are finding silver linings in this time of togetherness, and being apart too!
All good things,
Monique

Important Volunteer Reminders
With the unprecedented public health crisis posed by COVID-19, ALL volunteer activities have been suspended until further notice. However, it is important to remember that these challenging times will end and volunteer activities will resume.
Here are a few important steps volunteers can take now to be ready to go when the suspension on volunteer activities is lifted.
Username & Password:
As a reminder, volunteers are required to sign in and sign out through the volunteer computer station located in the school front office. To do this, they need the username and password they created for the Volunteer and Background Check Application process.
- To retrieve, or reset either of these, go to myimpactpage.com and click on the “Forgot Username or Password” link. The username and a temporary password will be emailed to them.
- With this information, login again to myimpactpage.com and they will be prompted to create a new permanent password. Passwords need to be a minimum of 8 characters, with at least one upper and one lower case letter and at least one number.
New locations for the 2020/2021 school year?
Volunteers should send an email to update_volunteer_locations@beaverton.k12.or.us if they would like to update their school preference for 20/21, or if they are no longer volunteering.
They should include:
Name of school(s) to add
Name of school(s) to remove
