Welcome Back!
Hawthorne Elementary
First Days of School August 27th and 28th.
The first two days of the 20-21 school year (Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th) we will be using an A/B Schedule across the entire district for all grade levels. This schedule is being used for these two days to reduce the number of students in each school by 50% to better allow staff and the administration to review expectations, practices and protocols for the 20-21 school year. Team A Rotation will meet on Thursday the 27th and Team B Rotation will meet on Friday the 28th. This will also provide us a chance to practice the A/B model in case it is needed later in the year. The A/B model is only being planned for the first two days, on Monday, September 1st, we will be back to a traditional schedule.
Students on the Team “A” rotation: Last name starts with A-K
Students on the Team “B” rotation: Last name starts with L-Z
Accommodations will be made for families with multiple last names at Open House Conferences.
Staying Safe at School
Going back to school this fall will require schools and families to work together even more than before. Sioux Falls School District is making changes to their policies and operations with several goals: supporting learning; providing important services, such as school meals, extracurricular activities, and social services; and limiting the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Teachers and staff can teach and encourage preventive behaviors at school. Likewise, it will be important for families to emphasize and model healthy behaviors at home and to talk to your children about changes to expect this school year. Even if your child will attend school in-person, it is important to prepare for the possibility of virtual learning if school closes or if your child becomes exposed to COVID-19 and needs to stay home.

Hearing and Vision Screenings
Due to the need for many volunteers and the sharing of equipment, the Sioux Falls School District will not be completing our mass hearing and vision screenings for all 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students this fall. Please know that we will still be conducting screenings for Special Education evaluations as well as any staff or parent referral. If you have any hearing or vision questions or concerns regarding your student, please reach out to your school nurse for assistance. We will continue to evaluate this plan and look forward to re-starting our large screenings when it is safe to do so.
Before sending your child to school each day.
- Check in with your child each morning for signs of illness. If your child has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, they should not go to school.
- Make sure your child does not have a sore throat or other signs of illness, like a cough, diarrhea, severe headache, vomiting, or body aches.
- If your child has had close contact to a COVID-19 case, they should not go to school.
