HGMS Counseling Connection
January 2018
The Gladiators Guiding Gladiators Mentor program had their third "meet-up" with a holiday-themed gathering. It is great to see the relationships the 8th grade mentors and the 6th grade men-tees are building together. As we walked around and listened to the conversations, it made us proud of our students' leadership and listening skills, as well as their vulnerability.
Fourteen of our HGMS students were selected to be the recipients of the UTSA and Target "Heroes and Helpers" gifts. Each student was awarded a $100 Target Gift Card to shop for themselves or their families for the holidays. A police officer dressed in a Santa hat escorted each child through Target, helping them select anything their hearts desired. Volunteers were available to wrap presents and serve breakfast. UTSA and Target were both so good to all of our students. It was an amazing event that these students will remember forever!
The HGMS Kindness Club created fleece tie blankets for the patients at the Methodist Children's Hospital. The purpose of the project was to help make the children feel comfortable and loved during the holidays while at the hospital. Over 80 club members got together over 2 meetings to create the handmade blankets. The Kindness Club was able to deliver 30 blankets to the Methodist Children's Hospital. The hospital's newest furry member, Hazel, got to share in the warmth with a puppy blanket of her own. It was an unforgettable experience for the Kindness Club members to be able to spread some holiday cheer this season!
2018 is sure to be another GREAT year at HGMS!

Emotions in Middle School
Managing Moods
Physical growth and worries about friends, sports, and schoolwork can cause moodiness. Let your child know that you are available to talk. A quiet statement, such as "I remember what it feels like not to be asked to join a team," can invite them to open up about what's bothering them.
Finding Privacy
It's natural for your middle school child to want some time to themselves. They may close their bedroom door or walk outside to take a phone call for example. Show them that you respect their privacy by giving them space.
Fitting In
Many middle school students feel self-conscious. Being a part of a group of people who share their interests can help them focus on strengths and feel more confident. Encourage your child to participate in at least one activity. Help facilitate opportunities for them to socialize and connect with other kids.
