Building Brighter Futures
A Note from Mr. Ryan
Please read the information that follows thoroughly. There is a lot of news regarding the rest of the school year! Have a great weekend.
Upcoming Student Assessments
Between now and the end of the school year our students will be completing multiple assessments. Next week, our 3rd-graders will be taking the State of Illinois I.A.R. (Illinois Assessment of Readiness) assessment. During the final two weeks of May, all of our students will be completing the Spring Fastbridge benchmarking assessments. The information gained from these assessments will be used to help our staff adjust their instructional planning next Fall which, due to the unorthodox learning that has taken place over the last calendar year is more valuable than ever!
There are some things that can be done to help your child reduce test anxiety and increase success. The Parent Institute recommends that children follow the guidelines below before testing sessions:
Don’t stay up late. Aside from studying, the next best preparation is a good night’s sleep before the test.
Eat healthy meals. Make sure he/she eats a good breakfast. This provides energy at test time.
Wear a favorite outfit. Your child should pick one that makes him/her feel comfortable. Make sure there are layers so, if it is too hot or too cold, he/she can take off a sweater or sweatshirt.
Learn to relax. Some children find it helpful to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths before a test. Others like to imagine a peaceful place. It really does calm them down.
Be positive. Expecting to do well helps children do well. Encourage your child to think positive thoughts!

Pick Up & Drop Off Reminder
- Now that we have all of our students back in school our drop-off and pick-up process has become a bit more congested. Therefore, it is important that the traffic flow into the Park District drive followed. This will prevent a backup of vehicles onto Castle Street. The correct flow of traffic is outlined on the map below.
- On a related note, when we are under a lightning watch/severe weather advisory our dismissal process must be adjusted. We've experienced this once already this year and we were able to complete the dismissal process within five minutes of our typical dismissal. Thank you in advance for your patience on these severe weather days. As always, safety is our first priority!
- We have some students who have to enter their vehicles on the driver's side therefore, please limit pulling around the vehicle in front of you that is still waiting on a student.

NEWS FROM MUSIC
There will be an opportunity for K-5 students to perform musically this Spring. It will not be in the form of a formal spring concert that takes place in a regular school year. Students that wish to take part in performing will join Mr. Anderson (K-3), Mr. Aska (4-5), and RJMC (Rebecca Johnson) at The Music In The Park Summer Concert Series at Veteran's Park (The Gazebo across from The Opera House in downtown Sandwich). The event will take place on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Immediately following this event, at 7:45 p.m., there will be a second performance for residents at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion on Main St. in Sandwich. We will not enter the facility but will perform the songs outside on the sidewalk/lawn that students have been working on as a part of The Audience and Performer Decorum Unit as outlined by The National Association for Music Education standards.
The singalong is not sponsored by Sandwich schools. It is a community event that is presented by RJMC and the city of Sandwich. Students will be invited to perform the songs they have learned at approximately 6:30 p.m. and will be about 25-30 minutes in duration. The remainder of the time will be a sing-a-long for everyone in a "karaoke-style" manner with both Mr. Anderson and Mr. Aska playing guitar and piano with words projected to favorite sing-a-long songs for people of all ages. All are welcome to step up on the Gazebo and have their voices heard through microphones that will be placed to pick up voices without the necessity of putting hands-on for the safety and protection of those choosing to take part.
This is not a mandatory event for students and/or families. Students' music grades will not be affected one way or another if students attend or if they choose not to be there on May 26th. If students attend, they are welcome to come up onto the Gazebo and sing, or they could stand in front of the Gazebo or off to the side, or if parents/guardians would feel safer students could stand or sit with the families and put on a personal performance of the music that has been taught as a part of the curriculum for those that make up the audience. Parents are welcome to stand near their child if they are more comfortable. There is no suggested dress other than please look at weather conditions and dress accordingly. There is no set rain date. So, if we have to cancel because of the weather, we will not be making up the event. This is very simply a chance for our students to showcase their talents in an outside event.
NEWS FROM THE READING ROOM
As the school year winds down, we will administer our Spring Benchmarks, so when talking with your child at home, please stress the importance of doing well on these. My own 3rd grader is already stressing out about taking them, so we're trying to have rolling conversations to ease his mind. It is a fine line to walk in wanting the students to do well and putting too much pressure on them, so it's never too early to begin that conversation. At home, our discussion revolves around how the assessments are about what teachers need to improve upon more than what he knows/doesn't know, so we're measuring what we'll have to change in the future to ensure success for all of our students. Feel free to reach out if there are any questions regarding our Fastbridge tests! Thank you for all of your support at home, we all really appreciate it!
