For Heaven's Sake

Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - October 2019

From the Principal's Desk

As we move into the month of October and the fall season, we pray that cooler weather will be here soon! Let me start this month’s letter by thanking the volunteers who have been helping your PTC prepare for this year’s Carnival and Auction. We are thankful for your support of these events, and we are looking forward to a day full of fun activities on November 3rd. The PTC events help support our school and ongoing projects. Most recently, the PTC helped to fund the re-design of the marquis in front of the school, which will include a new digital display.

Also, just a quick reminder - please continue to follow the car line procedure for dropping off students in the morning and picking students up in the afternoon. Now that we are into October the traffic flow has been excellent because most are following the traffic map. Please be mindful of the 25 mph speed limit and the law that requires that all drivers not be using cell phones while traveling in a school zone.

On a personal note, I want to take an opportunity to compliment our students on their behavior during liturgical celebrations, especially those students who enhance our masses by sharing their gifts in the areas of singing, reading, and altar serving. Their leadership gives life to our celebrations! I am proud of Our Lady Queen of Heaven students for their dedication to their faith!

Community Coffee Cash Program

Thank you all so much for turning in your Community Coffee labels! So far, we have earned $582! This is great and it is only the end of September! Please continue saving those labels and turning them in to the front office!

The Community Cash For Schools® program supports participating schools that collect Proofs of Purchase from Community® products. These product Proofs of Purchase can be redeemed for cash that each school can spend to improve their school and fund the things they need. Schools can choose to allocate the money toward new textbooks, computers or even events. For decades, Community Cash for Schools has helped participating schools generate millions of dollars within the program.

Box Tops

Help earn money for our school by collecting Box Tops. You can continue to cut out the box tops or download the app and do it from your phone! It is SO easy now with the New Box Tops App! Click here for more information.

Classroom Fun

Pre - K

Our Pre-K friends had so much fun learning about communities and dressing up and their own community helpers!

Fifth grade has once again partnered with the PreK classes for Reading Buddies! This is a win-win reading activity that allows our students to focus on the speaking and listening standards, enjoy reading books together, and building lasting relationships that will carry them through their years at OLQHS!

Kindergarten was SO SILLY for the letter S with Silly Sock Day!

1st Grade

1st graders have been learning all about communities! Take a look at the wonderful job they did building their own communities.

2nd Grade

Students are having fun learning nouns! They went on a scavenger hunt around school to look for people, places, and things! And they are enjoying watching their tadpoles continue to grow!

3rd Grade

3rd grade is having fun and working on sorting genres of books!
Big picture

4th Grade

Look at these BRIGHT electrical engineers at work! The 4th graders have been learning about the transformation of energy in an electric circuit, so students created their own circuits to see how it works! They even made switches with paper clips to open and close their circuits! They did a wonderful job!

They also have been having some fun learning about independent and dependent clauses!

5th Grade

All 5th graders from the Diocese of Lake Charles attended the Fifth Grade Rally on September 17. It was a fun filled day of praise and worship that promoted respect for all life.

The 5th graders took a field trip and visited Central Library to learn about the wealth of resources available for public use. We were able to see the 3D printer in action as it created the Pokemon "Gengar." We enjoyed lunch at Mr. Gatti's followed by a tour of the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center to see two exhibits there - the "National Geographic 50 Greatest Landscapes" and "The Pelican State Goes to War." Here are a few of our favorite photographs from the NG display.

5th graders found out what barn owls eat by dissecting owl pellets during our study of ecosystems and food webs. Did you know that owls can eat about 3 small animals per day? Hmmm how many animals is that per week? Their favorite foods are mice, birds, shrew and rodents. An owl pellet is formed in the gizzard part of the stomach. It's made up of the hair and bones of the small animals that it eats and cannot digest. So it regurgitates a pellet made up of all the bones and fur of the animals it ate. Dissecting owl pellets is not for the faint of heart by no means! Our 5th graders however were plowing through their pellets with gloves and picking tools trying to get every single bone possible!

6th Grade

6th graders had fun doing a math scavenger hunt to learn how to solve ratio problems. They are also LOVING using the chrome books from their new cart! They have been using them to research saints and play quizlet live!

7th Grade

The 7th graders had fun at their day of reflection in September! They acted out the corporal works of mercy!
7th graders participated in an osmosis/diffusion experiment! They learned that soaking eggs in vinegar for 2 days dissolves the shell and allows the vinegar to diffuse into the egg. What a FUN egg-periment!

8th Grade

8th graders are having FUN with their 2nd grade buddies! The recently made rainbows - a sign of God's promise!

The Art World

Well, we already have five new members of the Artsonia Hall of Fame! Four of the students are Second Graders--Lori Kate Morein, Andrew Penfield, Aria Sookdial, and Raylee Walker. And we have our first Fourth Grader, Samuel Bebee. Congratulations to you all!

Our Kindergarteners are finishing their coloring of the American Flag for our local Veterans Group and will be learning about warm colors and cool colors. First Graders are learning how to draw flowers in a vase which they will color with crayons. (Mom's, you are going to love these.)

Second Graders are also doing a flag for the Veterans, but they have to DRAW it--including 50 stars and 13 stripes. Try it. It's not easy. Third Grade has been busy drawing and coloring "real" insects. They are coloring with pencil colors and they are lovely (for bugs).

Fourth Graders are involved with the Advent Card Contest that we do every year. They are busy drawing Mary, the Mother of God, and they are doing a great job! A winner will be selected by judges and it will be the Advent Card for the School/Church. It is a great honor. First, second, and third place will receive ribbons.

The Seventh Grade Art/Band/Chorus students have completed their designs for the masks they are making for the play, "The King and I". They have started painting their guard or dog masks and they are going to look great on the dancers in the play. Their designs are on display in the Fine Arts Building Hallway.

My Eighth Grade Fine Arts Survey is doing wonderful things. We have studied Illuminated Manuscripts and they are making their own Illuminated page which will include a Celtic Knot (which they drew), their initial in the Celtic Style Alphabet, and several Celtic Images. We watched a wonderful film, "Brendan: The Secret of Kells" to reinforce what we learned in class.

Remember, in Art Class we are busy creating, making messes, and having fun!

Brenda Foshee, Art

PS: Come and check out my hall. It is spectacular!!

Spanish 1 & Friends

Spanish 1 students were able to visit with some friends from Colombia, Sr. & Sra. Nester and Berta Rojas. They came to their class from Bogota Colombia to converse in Spanish and they had fun learning about each other’s culture.. To prepare, students researched and prepared a brief study of the country of Colombia.

asbestos statement

Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced.
