FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH
ASSET #34 CULTURAL COMPETENCE
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

TEST PREP TIP:
Standardized test season will soon be here. This is the time of year where students and teachers experience test anxiety. Parents here is one way you can help prepare your child for testing:
Give your child a chance to practice
If your child has trouble taking tests, try practicing test questions and studying new words at home. Your child's school or the library may have some samples to use. Keep the sessions short, and set small, manageable goals so that the extra practice boosts your child's confidence (Narang, 2008).
Tutoring, Mentoring and Test Preparation!
All students are welcome to take advantage of this great opportunity! The West Carrollton National Honors Society, Frank Nicholas and Miami Shores Baptist Church have partnered to offer afterschool tutoring to Nicholas students. The sessions will be held at Miami Shores Baptist Church (next door to Nicholas) on Wednesdays beginning February 17th through May 18th. Sessions will run from 5:30 to 7:00pm. Each session will include both math and literacy instruction and a light snack. Additional social and mentoring activities will be available as well. Parents are encouraged and welcome to attend. For more information or permission slips, contact the main office at 937- 859 - 5121.
