PROPEL SCHOOLS SPECIAL UPDATE

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM DR. TINA CHEKAN

Propel Schools Families,

The remnants of Tropical Depression Ida quickly impacted our region today, Wednesday, September 1, 2021, during the morning commute/rush hour. This weather event brought a substantial amount of rainfall to our area. Beginning late Tuesday evening, our team closely monitored local weather conditions so that decisions regarding scholar safety could be made using the best possible information.

As the rainfall intensified just after 7:00 AM, a flash flood warning was issued for our region. We began to see reports of flash, urban and localized flooding across the neighborhoods in which our scholars reside, in addition to mudslides, trees down across roadways/powerlines and localized power outages. Just before 8:00 AM, we received notification from one of our largest transportation providers that they were not sending buses to transport Propel scholars.

As a result of the rapidly devolving weather/transportation/road conditions, we made the difficult decision to close our school buildings, in the interest of scholar safety and well-being.

We know that unplanned school closures negatively impact scholar families in a variety of ways. We apologize for the inconvenience that this unplanned disruption may have caused for families who had to scramble to make alternate plans for work, childcare and other daily family activities.

At Propel Schools, we place the safety of all of our scholars at the center of everything we do. With an enrolled scholar population that spans more than 30 different school districts, our decision regarding the September 1, 2021 emergency school closure was made in the best interest of all scholars.

We thank you for your patience, for your flexibility and for choosing Propel Schools as your partner in education.

URGENT REMINDER! TECHNOLOGY LENDING AGREEMENTS REQUIRED FOR EACH SCHOLAR!

Our schools have begun the process of distributing technology devices to scholars who have a signed technology agreement on file with Propel Schools. Our 1:1 scholar technology will allow our scholars to engage with their education at home, in case of any school closure emergency. Our technology lending program assures that every scholar has a device to use, both in the school building and to use at home for school-related purposes.

Please be sure that you have signed a lending agreement so that a device can be loaned to your scholar! Scholars in grades K-2 will be loaned an iPad and scholars in grades 3-12 will be loaned a Chromebook for use in the 2021-2022 school year. Please note the following:

  • If your scholar did not return the device that was loaned to them last year, they will not receive an updated device for this year. If you have a device from last year yet to return, please reach out to your school's leadership team for more information.
  • Families MUST complete technology device lending agreements prior to a device being distributed to your scholar. All families must complete one lending agreement per scholar.
  • Families with scholars in grades K-2 MUST complete an IPAD LENDING AGREEMENT- one per scholar.
  • Families with scholars in grades 3-12 MUST complete a CHROMEBOOK LENDING AGREEMENT - one per scholar.

REMINDER! 2021-2022 PROPEL SCHOOLS HANDBOOKS FOR FAMILY SIGNATURE ARE AVAILABLE NOW!

Each year, Propel Schools provides all families with access to the Propel Schools "Scholar and Family Handbook" so that important information and school community expectations are clearly outlined. All families are required to review the handbook with their scholars and sign an acknowledgment page. This assures that scholars, schools and families are all aware of expectations regarding behavior, attendance, dress code and many other vital topics.

Among the other vital topics covered in the handbook are policies and procedures regarding appropriate and healthy scholar use of the internet at Propel Schools. We want our scholars to be safe online and be aware of the potential pitfalls and dangers inherent in the digital world.

Scholar access to the internet at Propel Schools will not be granted until Propel receives a parent or guardian’s acknowledgment of the 2021-2022 Scholar and Family Handbook, which outlines expectations for responsible use of technology and the internet.

We thank you in advance for reviewing the handbook with your scholar and then digitally signing the acknowledgment page so that your scholar will be permitted to access the internet while at school.

Families of high school scholars are required to sign the acknowledgment page of the 2021-2022 Propel High Schools Handbook.

Families of scholars in grades K-8 are required to sign the acknowledgment page of the 2021-2022 K-8 Scholar and Family Handbook

After signing the acknowledgment via the links provided above, an electronic copy of the handbook will be sent to the email address you submitted to ScriptApp when starting your signature submission. Please keep the handbook on file for future reference. PDFs of the handbooks are also available on our website.
