Concert and Bake Sale Were a Success!

Thank you for joining the fun at the West Homer Music Concert last Monday. It was wonderful to see so many of you there. I also greatly appreciated the numerous parents who donated goodies for our bake sale. We made over $300 for our spring field trip, and we could not have done it without you!

Classroom Happenings

Last week we completed our quarter 2 book report project by introducing our puppets to the class, and then participating in a “character conversation”. Students sat in pairs and had conversations with characters from other books. They rotated every couple of minutes and were able to enjoy the company of many characters from all sorts of places! It was wonderful to see the creativity and effort students put forth with their wooden spoon book reports. Thank you for your support at home to make the project a success! In math we have continued our work with polygons and angles. Students compared and contrasted polygons as well as practiced measuring angles with a protractor. In reading, we continued our work with “City of Ember”. Students read a chapter a day with their reading partner. We focused on the reading skill of identifying main ideas and details. Finally, in writing we have continued to prepare for our AWA writing testing by studying and practicing the organizational structure of expository writing.

What's Next?

This week we will be studying cause and effect relationships as we continue reading “City of Ember”. In math students will be identifying angles of a circle, sorting polygons, and exploring rotational symmetry. We will also be starting a new social studies unit about early English settlements. We will be comparing and contrasting the Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth colonies. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week students will be taking the AWA writing assessment. Students will be given several prompts to choose from and three 45 minute writing periods to complete the prompt independently. Ensuring a good breakfast and lots of sleep these nights will be especially important.

Movie Night- December 20th

The Thursday before Christmas break, December 20, the fifth grade classes will be hosting a movie night in the West Homer gym to raise field trip money. We will be playing “Arthur’s Christmas”. Food and drink will be served. We are looking for parents interested in supporting the event by helping prepare and serve and food. If you are interested please let me know!

Holiday Food Drive

West Homer students and staff will be collecting cans and nonperishable food items between December 3rd and December 18th. The classes will be competing against each other to see who can provide the most food for Share the Spirit. There will be a box labeled "Putney" outside of Mr. Marshall's office for students to place their food items on their way in to school.
