The WES Parent Wildcat Weekly
Home of the Wildcats!
Week of January 4, 2021
Hello from Principal Holmes!
Happy New Year and welcome to 2021! This is going to be a great second half of the year of learning for our wildcats!!
I hope all of our families enjoyed a restful and healthy winter break. I was able to spend some special time with my grandkids. Oh, how they warmed my heart!
With the change from hybrid to virtual learning mode for these first two weeks back, your child's teacher communicated this weekend with you all and shared an updated schedule. If your child attends school on Monday and Tuesday then they will meet with their teacher from 8:45-11:30 and for the Thursday and Friday students, they will meet with their teacher from 12:45-3:30. This will be all four days of the week with the exception of Wednesday when our students meet with their teacher from 9:00-10:00 for their class meeting.
For our already virtual students, there should be minimal (possible time change for encore) to no changes to their schedule already in place.
We appreciate your continued flexibility as we make these adjustments. We thank you in advance for continuing to support our wildcats during their synchronous as well as asynchronous learning times.
Spotsylvania County Public Schools continues to track the number of students in our school community who are affected by COVID-19. This information is used to inform division leadership about the impact of COVID-19 on our school population and is tracked regardless of the method of instruction (virtual or hybrid) the student receives. Please see the additional information from Nurse Stevens in reference to reporting any exposures.
Report cards will be available on Parent Vue on 1/8/21. If you would prefer a hard copy of your child's report card- please contact your child's teacher. We are excited to celebrate the growth of our wildcats during the first semester. !
As always, we are here to partner with you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or administration with any questions or feedback.
With wildcat pride and spirit,
Dianne Holmes

Reading and Math Support
Reading
Lexia is a computer-based reading program currently being used by students at Wilderness and the SCPS school division in kindergarten through fifth grades. Lexia is a research-based program that provides reading instruction to meet the individual needs of our students. Through constant feedback and assessment as students are working through the program, Lexia is able to gather data to identify areas of strength and growth, then provide activities to boost student reading. Students work on basic literacy skills to include phonics, word study, and reading comprehension. It is important for your child to complete his or her Lexia minutes and units each week to boost reading success. Using Lexia is part of the student's learning expectations.Math
Reflex is a computer-based mathematics program that focuses on fact fluency. Reflex is a researched-based program that provides individualized instruction to each student based on their performance on the tasks. Fact fluency is key in students' mathematical development and opens the door for greater success with higher-level math problems. In working through the program, students are engaged in various games and activities to build upon their skills. As your child is working on Reflex, be sure that they get a "green light" on their activity so it is marked complete. It is important for your child to complete his or her Reflex minutes each week to boost math success. Using Reflex is part of the student's learning expectations.
